Christie’s to Sell $250 M. in Art from Anne Bass’s Collection – ARTnews.com

Twelve works of Impressionist and modern art from the collection of philanthropist Anne Bass will be sold at Christie’s this spring.
Among those works are paintings by Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, and Mark Rothko. As a whole, the group is expected to fetch $250 million. Those pieces will hit the auction block during a single-owner sale held as part of Christie’s marquee modern and contemporary art sales in May.
Bass died at 78 in 2020. The ex-wife of Texas magnate Sid Richardson Bass, who amassed his wealth in the oil industry and later became a major Disney shareholder, she ranked on the annual ARTnews Top 200 Collectors list between 1990 and 1994. Bass provided gaming funding to the Fort Worth Art Museum, the New York City Ballet, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the New York Botanical Garden, and gifted couture pieces to the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The most highly valued works headed to Christie’s are two Rothko paintings that once hung in the living room of Bass’s New York apartment.
One of them, Untitled (Shades of Red), is being given an estimate of $60 million–$80 million. The other, No. 1, an orange and pink abstraction, is estimated at $45 million–$65 million. Both are being offered with guarantees.
Meanwhile, a set of three Monet paintings, each estimated at prices between $30 million and $60 million, will also hit the block. A version of Degas’s famed sculpture of a young dancer was given a $20 million–$30 million estimate, and Balthus’s painting Jeune fille à la fenêtre, an interior view of a woman slouched over a living room window, is expected to sell for between $4 million and $6 million.
“The collection of Anne Bass represents everything that today’s buyers are seeking,” Bonnie Brennan, president of Christie’s Americas offices, said in a statement, calling Bass a “sophisticated collector who knew perfection when she saw it.”
It is the second major batch of Impressionist and modern artworks consigned from a private collection to Christie’s in the last year, after one from the late Texas oil mogul Edwin L. Cox. When pieces from Cox’s collection sold last year, they netted $332 million.
Highlights from the Bass collection will go on tour at Christie’s headquarters in London and Hong Kong, before going on view in New York ahead of the auction in May.

Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight transforms a ‘crazy’ Marvel origin story

“Will I be in a straight jacket?” The attending nurse laughed when I asked her that question, but I wasn’t joking.

My severe depression and anxiety had, up to that point, gone undiagnosed. So when my doctor sent me to a behavioral health clinic after a suicide attempt, my only experience with such places came from popular culture, especially comic books. As the attendants helped me remove the laces from my shoes and strings from my sweatshirt, four-color images filled my head, panels of the Joker cackling from a padded cell deep in Arkham Asylum or Kraven the Hunter bellowing at Dr. Ashley Kafka in Ravencroft Institute.

Superhero comics don’t have the best track record with mental health, and in the character’s earliest incarnations, Moon Knight was among the worst offenders. Initially introducing the character as a Batman riff in 1975’s Werewolf by Night #32, writer Doug Moench, who co-created the character with artist Don Perlin, added “schizophrenia” as a differentiating gimmick.

Despite this checkered past, Moon Knight has become one of Marvel’s most relatable superheroes — and he’s about to get an introduction to a much wider audience, thanks to a certain Disney Plus series starring Oscar Isaac. “Relatable” may seem like an odd way to talk about a hyper-violent guy who sometimes chats with a deity and flies around the city in aircraft piloted by his aide-de-camp Frenchie. But thanks to a multiple personality, and an angle added to the character shortly after his creation, Moon Knight stories have featured some of superhero fiction’s most nuanced portrayals of mental health.

Moon Knight came to be when an act of heroism cost amoral mercenary Steven Grant his life and he was resurrected by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. As the Fist of Khonshu, Moon Knight defended those who traveled under the moon, but the psychic trauma resulted in additional identities. Initially, these identities included the suave billionaire Steven Grant and hard-luck cabbie Jake Lockley, but would grow to include the methodical detective Mr. Knight and, in a memorable run by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev, Captain America, Wolverine, and Spider-Man.

Through the 1990s, Moench and other writers varied the personalities. Occasionally, Frenchie or others would refer to Moon Knight’s “schizophrenia,” and some stories treated the identities as distinct from one another. More often than not, Spector treated his identities as characters, tools in his mission. Typical scenes would show Spector changing out of his suit and donning a newsboy cap, choosing Jake Lockley instead of Steven Grant for a certain task.

But as so often happened in the 2000s, the Ultimate Universe changed everything.

When Moon Knight arrived in 2005’s Ultimate Spider-Man #79, he checked off all the Ultimate universe boxes. Ultimate Moon Knight wore a slightly different white costume designed by Mark Bagley, had the bad attitude common to the universe’s heroes, and a backstory that seemed arbitrarily altered from his Earth-616 counterpart.

But Ultimate Spider-Man writer Brian Michael Bendis most strongly distinguished this Moon Knight by accentuating the multiple personalities. This hero didn’t simply adopt new personas to suit a mission. He had full-blown dissociative identity disorder (D.I.D.). In Bendis’s hands, Moon Knight would shift from one personality to another without warning, with his identities even going to battle against one another.

This new focus had almost immediate repercussions in the mainstream Marvel Universe, especially in Ed Brubaker and Mike Deodato’s 2010 Secret Avengers run. These stories found Steve Rogers deploying Moon Knight as an undercover agent, taking advantage of Spector’s shifting selfhood.

When Warren Ellis and Jamie McKelvie took over the book with issue #16, Moon Knight officially became the team’s “crazy person,” at least according to the first page introductions. When a stray bullet lands in his leg, Moon Knight assures his teammate Beast, “Relax. I’m far too borderline psychotic to feel pain.”

For the next few years, insanity became Moon Knight’s core trait. When Bendis and Maleeve launched their run in 2012, they portrayed Moon Knight as a delusional annoyance to other superheroes, even as he imagined himself to be one of the Avengers. To be sure, Bendis gets in some quality jokes at the expense of Spector’s troubled psyche. But it also introduces a tantalizing concept, one not always expired in comic book portrayals of mental health. Maybe Moon Knight wasn’t a hero despite his mental state, but because of it.

Ellis emphasized that approach when he returned to the character for the first six issues of a new ongoing in 2014, teaming with artist Declan Shalvey, colorist Jordie Bellaire, and letterer Chris Eliopoulos. These stories featured regular appearances by a fourth identity, the cool and collected Mr. Knight, a variation of which showed up in 2011’s Secret Avengers #19. Riding in a white limousine and consulting with police detectives, Mr. Knight recalls a hardboiled detective more than a spandex-laden superhero.

For this series, Ellis and Shalvey looked past the many previous takes on Moon Knight. Via email, Shalvey told me that they approached the hero “like a brand new character.” Mr. Knight helped the creative team reach that goal, explained Shalvey, giving them a fresh canvas to work with without getting bogged down in the character’s convoluted history. “Mr. Knight not being in a superhero outfit, being in a white suit, provided a whole new way to draw the character that hadn’t really been explored before.”

For their run, Ellis and Shalvey invoked Moon Knight’s unusual mental state but did not exploit it. Other characters still treated Moon Knight with suspicion, and he regularly had conversations with Khonshu, appearing as a bird-skeleton wearing a dapper white suit, with Grant and Lockley standing by. But for all its off-kilter energy, the Ellis and Shalvey run featured Spector at peace with his fractured psyche.

Jeff Lemire and Greg Smallwood further explored that aspect in the ninth Moon Knight ongoing, launched in 2016. The first five-issue arc, “Welcome to New Egypt,” partially plays like a classic Moon Knight story, in which the hero and his long-established supporting cast must escape agents of the god Seth to prevent the destruction of Earth.

Lemire juxtaposes this plot with scenes in a mental hospital, where psychiatrist Dr. Emmet treats Spector and his friends. At first glance, these scenes seem like the business as usual for comic book portrayals of mental health, the type that terrified me during my first stay in an institution. Babbling patients wander the white antiseptic hallways, menaced by hateful nurses and orderlies.

While my hospital stays have put me into contact with some frightening figures, and I have certainly dealt with nurses who made questionable care choices, Lemire’s choices strike me as exaggerated. But rather than use these elements to make mental health patients into weirdos who need to be fixed before they re-enter society, Lemire makes Spector a hero whose power comes from his unusual mental state.

Lemire never clarifies if Emmet and her (admittedly abusive) staff truly want to help Spector by freeing him from the Khonshu coping mechanism he’s made for himself, or if they’re minions of Seth. Smallwood enhances the ambiguity by varying panel layouts and linework. Scenes in the mental institution feature realistic figures constrained in tight, small panels, made more claustrophobic by colorist Jordie Bellaire’s dingy washes. When Moon Knight puts on his costume, Smallwood’s figures grow dynamic and the panels widen, accentuated by Bellaire’s brighter tones. Cory Petit letters Khonshu with an otherworldly font, keeping the word balloons spaced apart, unmoored. Between each panel Smallwood leaves swaths of white space, showing literal nothingness between realities.

Midway through the adventure, confusion overwhelms Spector. Lost in a subway tunnel, unsure if he just battled the forces of Seth or beat up travel doctors to escape a mental institution, Spector drops to his knees and calls out for help. Khonshu arrives, rendered by Smallwood as an indistinct sketch, and dismisses Spector’s questions about truth.

“Let your insanity guide you,” instructs Khonshu, his words captured in a single black balloon, hovering in the darkness surrounding Spector’s head. The next page begins with a bright horizontal panel, taking a bird’s eye view of the unmasked Moon Knight in a white three-piece suit. On either side of his outstretched arms, we see the words, “Let your madness show you the way.”

This moment serves as a turning point, not just for the story, but for Moon Knight as a character. On a plot level, Moon Knight’s trust in his perception allows him to not only find a way out and save his friends but also eventually break free of Khonshu. Over the next several issues, Spector redefines himself not as a broken person or a mistake, but as someone with a different way of approaching the world, which offers its own benefits as much as it offers challenges.

With this breakthrough, mental illness is no longer a mere gimmick for Moon Knight. Building on the work done by Moench, Bendis, Ellis, and others, Lemire gives us a superhero whose mental state does not adhere to simple binaries. He’s not a healthy person with a relatively stable outlook on the world, nor is he a madman driven to dangerous ends. Rather, he’s a person whose brain works differently from others, a condition that presents challenges and offers opportunities for heroism.

For the most part, creative teams who followed Lemire and Smallwood have continued exploring this approach. Say Anything singer Max Bemis joined artist Jacen Burrows for an arc that contrasted Spector’s mental state to that of a villain, while the current ongoing from Jed Mackay, Alessandro Cappuccio, and Rachelle Rosenberg features Moon Knight balancing his personalities to serve others through his Midnight Mission.

Teasers for the Disney Plus Moon Knight series suggests that the show will play up the character’s insanity. Putin told Scholz the law that payments for Russian energy supplies would have to be made in rubles does not apply to European partners, and payments would continue to be made in euros and transferred to Gazprom Bank, which is not affected by sanctions, and then converted into rubles, according to the readout. 
“Chancellor Scholz did not agree to this procedure in the conversation, but asked for written information to better understand the procedure,” the readout said. Netherlands: The Dutch government asked the public to use less gas as it hopes to reduce its dependency on Russian imports, according to a spokesperson for the economy ministry. However, the Netherlands would not be triggering a gas crisis plan, a spokesperson told CNN. Instead, the government hopes to reduce Dutch gas usage through a campaign addressing its citizens. Austria: Vienna issued an “early warning” of possible natural gas shortages in the country, which also follows Russia’s threat to cut off supplies if it was not paid in rubles. The early-stage warning sees Austria take “the next step in the preparation for an emergency,” Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler wrote on Twitter.

President Joe Biden’s 2023 federal budget proposal, released Monday, calls for nearly $82 billion for the Department of Health and Human Services over five years to prepare for future pandemics.
The proposal includes funds for a new biomedical research agency, along with disease forecasting tools, long-COVID research, vaccination programs, and mental health services for the health care work force.
The budget would also strengthen and expand clinical trial infrastructure and manufacturing capacity, The New York Times reported.
“That is a drop in the bucket compared to what it’s cost so far to deal with COVID,” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said, according to the Times.
Becerra noted that the proposed budget is separate from the $22.5 billion in additional emergency funding the White house has requested from Congress to replenish COVID-19 tests, therapies, and vaccines.  
“What we need to continue to finish the job on COVID, we need immediately,” he said. “What we’re asking for in this budget for long term preparedness is very separate.” Much of the proposed budget would build on an annual spending bill passed by early March and represents an increase of 27 percent in funding for HHS over 2021, the Times said.
Lawrence A. Tabak, acting director news of the National Institutes of Health said the funding for pandemic preparedness “is critical to addressing the new opportunities … and will continue to lay the groundwork for a robust biomedical research enterprise for years to come as the nation adapts to meet the demands and possibilities in our changing world.”

“For the women affected, the most life-altering reproductive choice – whether or not to become pregnant – is no choice at all,” said the UNFPA chief.

The report outlined that gender inequality and stalled development, drive high rates of unintended pregnancies. 
For example, an estimated 257 million women around the world who want to avoid pregnancy are not using safe, modern methods of contraception.  
And where data is available, nearly a quarter of all women, feel unable to say no to demands for sex.  
A range of factors also contribute to unintended pregnancies, including a lack of sexual and reproductive healthcare; contraceptive that does not suit women’s circumstances; harmful norms surrounding women controlling their own bodies; sexual violence and reproductive coercion; and shaming in health services.

Crisis and conflict rob women of their agency at all levels, drastically increasing the risk of unintended pregnancy. 
Women often lose access to contraceptives and sexual violence increases, according to the report, which cites studies showing that over 20 per cent of refugee women and girls will face sexual violence.

Would you remember your contraception?” asked Dr. Kanem.   “In the days, weeks and months after a crisis starts, sexual and reproductive health and protection services save lives, shield women and girls from harm and prevent unintended pregnancies. They are as vital as food, water and shelter.”

The report shows how easily the most fundamental rights of women and girls are pushed to the backburner in both times of peace and during war.  
It calls on decision-makers and those in charge of health systems to help prevent unintended pregnancies by improving accessibility, acceptability and contraception choices – while also urging policy makers and community leaders to empower women and girls to make affirmative decisions about sex, contraception and motherhood. 
If this is done, women and girls will be able to contribute fully to society with the tools, information and power to decide for themselves whether or not to have children. 
“By putting the power to make this most fundamental decision squarely in the hands of women and girls, societies can ensure that motherhood is an aspiration and not an inevitability,” concluded the UNFPA chief.

Sales made by dealers at art fairs accounted for 29 percent of their annual totals in 2021, according to McAndrew’s report. That number is still a far cry from the 43 percent reported in 2019. Meanwhile, public auction sales reached $26.3 billion in 2021, an increase of 47 percent from the 2020 total. Private sales at auction houses generated $4.1 billion, up 32 percent from the $3.1 billion reported in 2020. The U.S. and China were the largest markets for public auction sales, with 32 percent and 33 percent shares, respectively. McAndrew’s report said that online sales continued to grow in 2021. Online sales channels accounted for 20 percent of all dealer sales, reaching $13.3 billion (including sales made via art fair–hosted online viewing rooms). The figure is more than double the figures reported by McAndrew for 2019.
The ongoing global crisis has not deterred the ultra-wealthy from investing in art. The median expenditure by the collectors surveyed in the report nearly doubled between 2020 and 2021, reaching $274,000 last year. That rise is being driven in part by baby-boomer collectors, who, despite buying fewer works than their younger counterparts, had the highest average expenditure overall, at $346,000.

Medical Pot May Help You Avoid Opioids for Back Pain, Arthritis

TUESDAY, March 22, 2022 (HealthDay News) — Medical marijuana could be a viable alternative to opioid painkillers for people dealing with arthritis or chronic back pain, two new studies show.
Many patients prescribed opioids for their chronic pain wound up taking fewer painkillers — or stopping them altogether — after doctors certified them for medical cannabis, said lead researcher Dr. Asif Ilyas, an orthopedic surgeon at Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in Philadelphia.
“We found broadly a significant reduction in opioid use when they started using medical cannabis,” Ilyas said. “We saw a decrease in approximately 40% of opioid use after starting medical cannabis, with 37% to 38% of patients completely discontinuing opioid use altogether.”
If validated, these results indicate that medical marijuana could be a potential means of combating America’s opioid epidemic, which has been driven in part by prescription painkillers, said Dr. fitness Stuart Fischer, an orthopedic surgeon with Summit Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Summit, N.J.
“We have a huge number of people who are on opioids who are being treated for chronic back pain,” said Fischer, who wasn’t part of the studies. “If we could move that population to something that’s safer but just as effective, we would do very well.” For the studies, Ilyas and his colleagues recruited 186 patients with chronic back pain and 40 patients with chronic arthritis pain.
Between February 2018 and July 2019, doctors certified the patients to purchase medical marijuana in the state of Pennsylvania. The patients were allowed to use pot as they chose — some vaped or smoked, while others used edibles.
Doctors then tracked the patients’ opioid painkiller use for six months using a state-run prescription drug monitoring database, and using an opioid measurement called morphine milligram equivalents (MME): Average daily opioid prescriptions for arthritis patients declined during the study period, falling from 18.2 to 9.8 MME.
Back pain patients also experience a reduction in their average daily opioid prescriptions, from 15.1 to 11 MME.
About 37% of arthritis patients and 38% of back pain patients quit opioid painkillers altogether. Patients in both groups experienced a reduction in their pain symptoms and an improvement in their physical health. Medical cannabis also doesn’t appear to carry the same risk of addiction as opioid painkillers, Ilyas added. “One of the biggest central problems with opioids is both addiction and the need for higher dosages to achieve the same results,” Ilyas said. “Based on our current understanding of medical cannabis, you do not need increasing doses to achieve the same results and we’re not yet seeing any addictive qualities to it.”
These results provide fresh evidence for the potential to treat pain with medical pot, Fischer said.
“Obviously these studies are early. Medical marijuana has not been in public use for all that long, so we need more data and we need more studies. We need more information,” Fischer continued. “Nonetheless, these two studies are a very, very good start.”
More research is needed, in part, to convince insurance companies to cover the cost of medical pot as they do prescription opioids, the experts said.
“One of the biggest barriers to usage is cost,” Ilyas explained. “It’s quite expensive, and there’s no insurance coverage for it at this time, even with private carriers.” Ilyas said his future research will focus on how benefits differ, depending on the type of medical cannabis product, and different delivery methods.
“We want to emphasize this looks very promising, but we’re very early in our understanding of this. More investigation is needed,” Ilyas said.
Ilyas presented results from the two studies at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, taking place this week in Chicago.
