Smile’s ending, explained: ‘The movie teaches you how to watch it’

In some ways, Parker Finn’s feature debut Smile is a standard horror movie, where a central character (hospital therapist Rose, played by Sosie Bacon) falls prey to a supernatural phenomenon and spends most of the movie dealing with the increasingly terrifying battle to understand, resist, and survive what’s happening to her.

But Smile takes an unusual tack at the end, with Finn’s script going in directions designed to shake off horror fans who think they can see the twists coming. After the movie’s world premiere at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, Polygon sat down with Finn and asked him to walk through the movie’s ending: What went into it on a practical level, how to interpret what we see on screen, and why he left out one detail that seems particularly significant.

[Ed. note: Ending spoilers ahead for Smile.]

How does the movie Smile end?

Rose first learns about the smiling monster that takes over her life when a distraught young woman named Laura Weaver (Caitlin Stasey) is brought to Rose’s hospital in a state of near-hysteria. Laura explains that she’s been seeing an “entity” no one else can see, a creature with a horrible smile that sometimes appears to her in the guise of other people she knows, alive or dead. Then Laura collapses screaming, clearly something over her shoulder that Rose can’t see. As Rose calls for help, Laura stands up calmly smiling, and slits her own throat.

From that moment on, Rose keeps seeing Laura, in public and private, smiling at her. She has visions and nightmares that feature other people she knows, smiling and screaming at her. Rose tells other people about the entity, including her fiancé Trevor (Jessie T. Usher) and her sister Holly (Gillian Zinser), but they believe she’s having delusions brought on by the stress and trauma of Laura’s death. Eventually, Rose and her ex, a policeman named Joel (Kyle Gallner) discover a chain of similarly grotesque suicides stretching back into the past. The pattern suggests that the entity haunts someone until they’re deeply traumatized, then forces them to kill themselves in front of a witness, who is traumatized by the death. Then the entity starts over with its new victim.

Rose and Joel find one person who broke the chain and survived, by grotesquely murdering someone else in front of a witness and passing the entity on to that witness. That sets up a few likely possibilities for the end: Rose can either sacrifice someone else to survive, like Naomi Watts’ character Rachel does with a similar passed-on curse in The Ring; she can fail to break the curse and the entity can win, meaning Rose dies in front of someone else who takes on the trauma; or she can find another way to confront and fight the creature.

In the end, Smile has all three of those endings. Rose brutally stabs a terrified patient to death at her hospital in front of her screaming boss, Morgan (Kal Penn). But that turns out to be a dream she’s having while passed out in her car in front of the hospital, and she flees the hospital and Morgan in horror.

Then she drives to her abandoned, disintegrating childhood home, where her addict mother died of an overdose — which Rose potentially could have prevented if she’d called an ambulance as her mother begged her to do, instead of fleeing in fear. The original repressed trauma and guilt over her mother’s death is what drew the smiling entity to her in the first place. Rose faces the creature first in the form of her mother, then in the form of a giant, spindly creature. But she forgives herself for failing to help her mother when she was 10 years old, and sets the creature and the house on fire, symbolizing her willingness to finally let go of the past.

But when she returns to Joel to apologize for pushing him away when they were dating, and admit that he scared her because he was getting past her psychological barriers, he reveals himself as the entity again. Rose realizes she’s still at her childhood home, and never actually fought the entity or left — the entire confrontation she experienced was another one of the creature’s hallucinations. Joel arrives, and Rose runs from him, recognizing that the creature means for him to witness her forced suicide and become its next victim.

Inside the house, the tall, spindly creature rips its face off, revealing something raw and glistening with a series of toothy grins all down its face. Then it forces Rose’s mouth open and crawls inside her. When Joel breaks into the house, he just sees Rose, dumping kerosene on herself and turning to smile at him. She sets herself on fire and dies, completing the chain and setting Joel up as the creature’s next prey.

What does the end of Smile mean?

Smile suggests there are many ways of dealing with trauma, by passing it on (as abuse victims often do by abusing others), coming to terms with it, or collapsing under its weight. But Finn says the intention with the nested series of fake-out endings was to get ahead of an audience that might have been trying to get ahead of the movie.

“Horror audiences have gotten so savvy, so I tried to put myself in their shoes,” he says. “What would I be expecting? What would I be anticipating? And I tried to subvert that and do something that might catch them off-guard, and kind of flip them on their heads.”

At the same time, the “It was all a dream” ending is a notorious fake-out in movies, so Finn had to make sure he justified that route early on, by making it clear that the creature could provoke elaborate hallucinations in its victims — and that it specifically used those visions to manipulate their behavior and heighten their fear.

“The movie all along teaches you how to watch it, and teaching that you can’t trust Rose’s perception,” Finn says. “It’s in the DNA of the movie to mess with the viewer a little. So I wanted to really pay that off with how the movie ends, how what might feel like an ending might not be an ending. I leaned into that. From early on, I knew I was always interested in following the story to its worst logical conclusion. But I also wanted to have an emotional catharsis. So I wanted to have my cake and eat it too. Hopefully [the ending] delivers on that.”

Finn says he’s looking forward to viewers picking the movie apart, asking questions about what’s real and what isn’t. “But I also really love the idea that if something is happening in your mind, it doesn’t matter if it’s real or not,” he says. “For that person, the experience is real.”

What happened to Rose’s father?

The film’s opening sequence pans across a series of portraits of Rose’s family, with her mother, father, and her sister Holly all happy together. Then Rose’s father disappears from the pictures. It’s unclear whether he died or abandoned the family. Viewers could theorize that whatever happened to him set off Rose’s mother’s decay and led her to spiral into depression and addiction — but it could just as well be possible that he fled because he couldn’t deal with what was happening to her and how her mental health was breaking down. Finn says it was important to him to leave it as an open question.

“I wanted Smile to pretty much be a mother-daughter story. There’s so much in the idea of [Rose’s] isolation, of it being just her and her mom, alone. I like that there’s the tiniest hint that there was a father, clearly, at some point, but it’s deliberately ambiguous.”

Finn says that too much detail about what happened to Rose’s father might have shaped viewers’ expectations or responses in ways that he didn’t want to bring into the story. “I didn’t want it to have undue influence,” he says. “Just the absence, that was the important thing to me — that the absence spoke volumes and really amplified the mother-daughter relationship.”

Connections between Smile and a short that inspired it

Finn previously made a short movie set in the same world, Laura Hasn’t Slept, which was meant to debut at SXSW in 2020. The festival that year was one of the first events to be shut down due to the spread of COVID-19, but Finn was still able to make a deal with Paramount to make Smile based on the strength of that short.

Unlike some short films that evolve into features, Laura Hasn’t Slept doesn’t tell the same story as Smile. “I like to think of them as like spiritual siblings,” Finn says. “Pieces of DNA from the short film are threaded through the feature, and little Easter eggs here and there. And then Caitlin Stasey, who plays Laura Weaver in Smile, is the titular Laura in Laura Hasn’t Slept as well.

Image: Paramount Pictures

“While the two roles, there’s a parallel running through them, they go in quite different directions. So I think it’s very fun. I’d be curious for people who have seen the feature first to go back and watch the short. They might see how the feature could almost be a sequel to the short.”

Audiences currently can’t see Laura Hasn’t Slept — it isn’t available for streaming or purchase at all — but Finn expects that to change soon.

“Paramount’s got it,” he says. “It will be coming back into the world soon. I think they’re gonna try to make sure that it’s out there and accessible in a lot of different ways.”

Will there be a Smile 2?

Finn doesn’t immediately have an idea for a sequel, at least not one he wants to admit to. “I wanted the movie to really exist for its own sake,” he says. “I wanted to tell this character’s story. That was what was really important to me. I think there’s a lot of fun to be had in the world of Smile. But certainly as a filmmaker, I never want to retread anything I’ve already done. So if there was ever to be more of Smile, I’d want to make sure it was something unexpected, and different than what Smile is.”

Instead, he’s currently developing other horror projects. “I’m working on a few different things, but nothing I’m talking about yet,” he says. “But genre and horror is always my first love. And I want to make genre films that are character-driven, that are doing some sort of exploration of the human condition, and the scary things about being a human being. That’s the stuff I really love. And if I can take that and twist it up with some sort of extraordinary genre element, that’s the lane I want to live in.”

UNs High-Level Meeting of World Leaders Falls Short of Gender Empowerment — Global Issues

UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous addresses the inaugural meeting of the UNGA Platform of Women Leaders at UN Headquarters during the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, 20 September 2022. Credit: UN Women/Ryan Brown by Thalif Deen (united nations) Friday, September 30, 2022 Inter Press Service UNITED NATIONS, Sep 30 (IPS) – When the UN’s high-level meeting of world leaders concluded last week, the head count seemed lopsided: 190 speakers, including 76 Heads of State, 50 Heads of Government, 4 Vice-Presidents, 5 Deputy Prime Ministers, 48 Ministers and 7 Heads of Delegations—overwhelmingly male.
Among the 190 speakers, there were only 23 women, “a figure that represents around 10 per cent of leaders who participated this year”, according to the UN.
The President of the General Assembly Csaba K?rösi of Hungary struck a note of political consolation when he said: “But though their numbers are small, women leaders “pack a punch”, to quote former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, who moderated this year’s first General Assembly Platform of Women Leaders”.
But the reaction from rights activists and civil society organizations (CSOs) was mostly negative.
Antonia Kirkland, Global Lead on Legal Equality at Equality Now told IPS “the dismal number of women leaders speaking at UNGA this year is very worrying given the regression on women’s rights in many parts of the world, including in the United States, where the UN General Assembly meets”. There is a well-documented correlation, she said, between peace and security generally, economic development and women’s rights, which has an impact on everyone.
“The low number of female leaders speaking at UNGA is less than half the already low number of women parliamentarians worldwide (just over 26% according to IPU).”
“And as it becomes harder and harder for civil society to access the United Nations, women’s rights organizations have less of an opportunity to hold governments accountable to their legal obligations and commitments to ensure gender equality,” Kirkland declared. The criticisms come amid longstanding complaints of how women are marginalized in the highest levels of the UN since its creation.
The male/female ratio for the Secretary-General stands at 9 vs zero. And the Presidency of the General Assembly (PGA), the highest policy-making body at the UN, is not far behind either.
The score stands at 73 men and 4 women as PGAs– even as the General Assembly elected another male candidate, as its 77th President, and who serves his one-year term beginning September 2022.
Since 1945, the only four women elected as presidents were: Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit of India (1953), Angie Brooks of Liberia (1969), Sheikha Haya Rashed Al-Khalifa of Bahrain (2006) and Maria Fernando Espinosa Garces of Ecuador (2018).
Meanwhile, women Heads of State and Government met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) High-level Week to discuss global issues in the newly created UNGA Platform of Women Leaders. The event, under the theme of “Transformative solutions by women leaders to today’s interlinked challenges”, highlighted the fact that women’s full and effective political participation and decision-making are crucial to addressing global priorities effectively, decisively, and inclusively, according to UN Women.

Naomi Mata?afa of Samoa, and Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja of Uganda, as well as Prime Minister Evelyna Wever-Croes of Aruba and Prime Minister Silveria E. Jacobs of St. Maarten, and former Prime Minister Helen Clark of New Zealand, the event was hosted by the Office of the President of the General Assembly and UN Women, in cooperation with the Council of Women World Leaders (CWWL).
Purnima Mane, a former Deputy Executive Director of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and UN Assistant-Secretary-General, told IPS that in June 2022, the UNGA passed a resolution commemorating the International Day of Women in Diplomacy which acknowledged the contribution of women globally at all levels of decision making who work for the achievement of sustainable development, peace and democracy.
“And yet, we recognize that women are grossly under-represented at most levels in the UN including national delegations and senior levels of the diplomatic corps.” While women’s political representation at senior levels is on the rise in many countries over the last few years, especially women serving as heads of State, she pointed out, it still has a long way to go with only 28 of the 193 Member states having Women heads of State of government. This low representation of women was evident in the recent UNGA session, she said. Of the 190 speakers, 23 were women, a figure that represents around 10 per cent of the leaders who participated this year – a number that is still “woefully low”, said Mane, a former President and CEO of Pathfinder International
It is significant, she said, that many of this small group of women leaders “pack a punch” as stated by former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, who moderated this year’s first General Assembly Platform of Women Leaders. At this newly launched General Assembly Platform of Women Leaders, the female heads of State of several countries like Aruba, Bangladesh, Hungary, Iceland, St. Maarten, Samoa and Uganda, addressed the group. “Undoubtedly this comment from Former New Zealand PM Clark gives us pause to think. It is true that some of the women leaders like those of Finland and many other Member States, have caused the world to sit up and take notice of their achievements.”
Many of the countries with female leadership are making a difference at the country level, focusing on gender equity and ensuring laws and policies which foster these. “These countries are also doing better in terms of development goals and making a difference in their region as a whole, also inspiring women around the world to recognize their potential. Imagine what the world would be like if this number of women leaders increased significantly, to the benefit of not just their countries, but also their regions and the world,” she added. The actions these women leaders have taken speak for themselves – they are pioneering and have yielded much-needed benefits, said Mane. “Data are plentiful to show what a difference these women leaders are making both domestically and internationally. Yet their numbers grow far too slowly”. “While numbers do not tell the whole story, they certainly indicate the source of the problem, and the world loses out in moving faster towards development and greater equity,” she declared.
Addressing the meeting of women leaders, Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, said: “When more women lead in political and public life, everyone benefits, especially in crises”. A new generation of girls see a possible future for themselves. Health, education, childcare, and violence against women receive greater attention and better solutions. “We must find every possible way to amplify the assets women leaders bring. This Platform is an opportunity to do just that.”
Recent global crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate, and conflicts, have shown the positive difference women’s leadership and decision-making can make in executive positions, parliaments, and public administration, she said. For example, the UNDP–UN Women COVID-19 Global Gender Response Tracker shows that governments with higher women’s representation in parliaments adopted a higher number of gender-sensitive policy measures in response to COVID-19, including policies aimed directly at strengthening women’s economic security.
Out of the 193 Member States of the United Nations, only 28 women serve as elected Heads of State or Government, she pointed out. Whilst progress has been made in many countries, the global proportion of women in other levels of political office worldwide still has far to go: 21 per news cent of the world’s ministers, 26 per cent of national parliamentarians, and 34 per cent of elected seats of local government. According to a new UN report, at the current pace of progress, equal representation in parliament will not be achieved until 2062, said Bahous.
Katrín Jakobsdóttir, Prime Minister of the Republic of Iceland and Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders, said: “It is my strong belief that the world needs more women leaders and more diverse leaders, people with all kinds of backgrounds and life experiences”. “The decisions leaders make affect all people in our societies. These decisions should be made by people who have a real and deep understanding of how most people live, of what their concerns are, and are therefore responsive to their needs.”

Fruit Leathers Have Detectable Pesticides: Report

Sept. 15, 2022 – Many brands of fruit leathers, a popular children’s snack, have detectable levels of pesticides, according to a new report from the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit organization aiming to improve human health and the environment. Many dried fruit snacks also have detectable pesticide levels.
It released the results today in a report, “Fruit leather: A snack sometimes chock full of pesticides and sugar.” The Environmental Working Group’s bottom line: “Fresh fruit is always going to be better,” says Sydney Evans, a science analyst for the group and a report co-author. To minimize pesticide exposure, dried fruit snacks are better than fruit leathers, she says, and organic is better than non-organic or conventional products.
But others blasted the report. “This fear mongering needs to stop,” says Teresa Thorne, executive director of the Alliance for Food and Farming, a nonprofit organization representing organic and conventional farmers growing fruits and vegetables. The levels found, she says, are well below the standards set as acceptable. Report Details The Environmental Working Group asked an independent lab to test 37 samples of organic and non-organic fruit leathers from 10 brands, as well as 30 samples of dried fruits, another popular take-along snack, from 16 brands. (Fruit leathers are made by dehydrating fruit puree into a sheet that’s shiny with a leather-like texture.)
None of the samples tested were above federally set tolerance levels for pesticides, Evans says. But the group believes those tolerance levels are too high.
Detectable levels of pesticides were found in all 26 samples of the non-organic (conventional) fruit leathers tested and in half of the non-organic samples of dried fruit, according to the Environmental Working Group, whose funding sources include organic food companies.
But some of the organic products evaluated also had pesticide levels similar to or higher than those found in conventional products. For instance, Trader Joe’s Organic Apple Strawberry Fruit Wrap had 247 parts per billion (ppb) of pesticide concentration, while Bob Snail Apple-Strawberry Stripe, a conventional product, had 106 ppb.
One sample of Stretch Island Raspberry Fruit Leather contained 17 pesticides, the most of all the leathers tested. When the researchers looked at the total amount of pesticides, also known as total pesticide concentration, samples from That’s It, Stretch Island, and Trader Joe’s had the highest total concentration, on average. The most commonly found pesticides were fungicides pyrimethanil, fludioxonil, and thiabendazole, and the insecticide acetamiprid. Exposure to pesticides has been linked to cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive and nervous system effects, and birth defects, among other problems.
“For me, the takeaway is [that] fresh fruit is always going to be better” if given a choice between that, the fruit leathers, and dried fruit, Evans says. If that’s not an option, she recommends choosing dried fruit snacks over the fruit leathers. The Environmental Working Group evaluation of 30 dried fruit products found conventionally grown dried cranberries, dates, figs, mangoes, and prunes had non-detectable levels of pesticides, while the highest levels were found on raisins and dried strawberries, cherries, and apples.
Fruit strips with the highest levels of pesticides often had apples as the first ingredient, Evans says. Apples are No. 5 on the 2022 “Dirty Dozen” list, the annual ranking of fruits and vegetables with the most pesticides produced by the group. The process of dehydrating fruit to make the fruit leathers also “drastically increases the concentration of natural sugar the snack contains,” the group says, resulting in far more sugar than a similar-size serving of fresh fruit would have. It also recommends avoiding fruit leathers and dried fruit with added sugar and additives such as flavor enhancers, food coloring, and corn syrup. Federal Regulations The Environmental Protection Agency sets tolerance levels for pesticide residues on foods. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Data Program is a national pesticide residue monitoring program. Other Perspectives “Nothing they found is surprising,” says Kaci Buhl, an associate professor and director of the Pesticide Safety Education Program at Oregon State University Extension, Corvallis, who reviewed the report for WebMD.
The findings also don’t support advice to avoid the fruit leathers altogether, she says.
“Parents should not be concerned as long as fruit leathers are consumed in moderation as part of a varied and balanced diet,” Buhl says. (Organic produce is also grown with pesticides, she notes.)
Others pointed out what they saw as discrepancies in the calculations. For instance, a That’s It Blueberry Fruit Bar, which is 35 grams (1.2 ounces), was found to have a total pesticide concentration of 3,541 ppb, while its Mini Blueberry Fruit Bar, at 20 grams (0.7 ounces), with the same ingredients, had a total pesticide concentration of 89. The fruit leather and dried fruit snacks are especially handy when those who live a distance from a food market run out of fresh fruit, Buhl says.
“We need to stop scaring people away from the foods they enjoy, especially when they are healthy foods like fruits and vegetables,” Thorne says.
On the alliance’s consumer information site, its pesticide calculator estimates that a child could news eat 340 servings a day of apple with no ill effects of pesticides “even if the apple has the highest pesticide residue recorded for apple by the USDA.”
WebMD reached out to companies for comment. Stretch Island did not respond, and That’s It declined to comment on the findings.

How to Visit the Top Caves in Slovenia

You’ve been charmed by the streets of Ljubljana and awestruck by the alpine wonders of Bled. But your visit to Slovenia isn’t complete until you’ve experienced at least one of the top 5 caves in Slovenia.

Here are the top tips from Terry Anzur, a Slovenian-American journalist at the blog Strangers in the Living Room:

  1. Postojna Cave: something for everyone
  2. Predjama Cave Castle: world’s largest cave castle
  3. Škočjan Caves: UNESCO heritage underground
  4. Pivka Cave: adventure for thrill-seekers
  5. Idrija Mercury Mine: deep dive into history

Which Slovenia cave adventure is right for you? In a country with hundreds of caves in Slovenia, there’s something for everyone: Natural beauty, fascinating history, epic adventure and even a Disneyland-style train ride.

The speedy train ride through Postojna Cave makes a Slovenia cave adventure accessible for travelers of all ages and abilities. Photo courtesy Iztok Media for Postojna Cave Park.

Postojna Cave: Accessible Slovenia Cave Adventure

If you have time for only one Slovenia cave adventure, make it Postojna Cave. This natural wonder has been wowing visitors for more than 200 years. In 1818, a local lamplighter stumbled into the cave and declared: “Here is paradise.”

More than 40 million people have visited Postojna Cave since then. It is the third most visited attraction in Slovenia, after Ljubljana and Bled. At times, you might have the feeling that you’re in a cave-themed amusement park. Don’t despair if there’s a line to board the train; it moves quickly.

The 3.7 km train ride makes the most astounding chambers and galleries accessible for all ages and abilities. Don’t miss the vast Dance Hall, lit by Murano glass chandeliers. There is an optional 1.5 km walk to the iconic “Brilliant” formation.

Be sure to stay seated on the train as it whips past the overhead rocks with deadly speed. Please respect nature by not touching the formations. They formed over millions of years, one drop of water at a time.

For maximum enjoyment, put down your camera. In the low light, your phone photos are likely to be disappointing. Flash photography is not allowed. Professional photographers need permission to set up lights.

Join this Postojna Cave tour from Ljubljana!

Slovenia’s Baby Dragons

Kids will love seeing the “baby dragons,” a unique species in Postojna Cave. The olms can live for 100 years and can survive a decade without food. Buy a separate ticket to the Vivarium to learn more about all the creatures of the underground world.

When to Visit: Postojna Cave is open 365 days a year. There’s an underground nativity scene during the holidays. Bring a warm jacket because of the constant 10-degree Celsius temperature, year-round. To avoid the summer crowds in June, July and August, arrive when the cave opens at 9 am. The big tour groups arrive later in the morning.

Getting there: Postojna Cave Park is an easy day trip from Ljubljana or Bled, by car or bus. Reserve tickets online or buy at the ticket office.

Pro tip: Stay at the Hotel Jama to skip the ticket line and get a discount on tour packages. Camping in the area is also popular. There’s a parking lot for motorhomes. There’s even a free kennel where your pet can wait while you tour the cave.

Predjama Castle: Mighty Slovenia Cave Fortress

Predjama Castle, the world’s largest cave fortress, is only a short drive from Postonja Cave. You can easily visit both on the same day with a combined “Two Adventures” ticket or combined tour.

Many group tours only stop for the insta-worthy photo opportunity of the Slovenia cave castle emerging from solid karst rock. But you should plan to go inside and learn the fascinating history.

The 15th Century knight Erazem withstood a siege for more than a year by smuggling in fresh food through the cave tunnels. Sadly, he didn’t survive a cannonball that struck the castle at its most vulnerable point: the toilet.

Make a wish as you ring the castle’s bell. It was used to warn of approaching invaders. You only have to admire the view of the surrounding countryside.

Pro tip: Get the Predjama Castle audio guide for a vivid description of life in the Middle Ages as you walk through the torture chamber and weapon rooms.

Go inside the iconic Predjama Cave Castle to visit the caves that made it possible to hold off an invading army for more than a year.

Škočjan Caves: UNESCO heritage Slovenia Cave

For a more natural Slovenia cave experience, visit the Škočjan Caves in Slovenia. UNESCO has organized a guided tour that presents the underground world heritage while respecting the environment.

You’ll be awestruck by the underground cathedrals, carved out over the centuries by the Reka River. Photography is not allowed for most of the tour inside the caves. Near the exit, there is a picture opportunity that conveys the majesty of what you have just experienced.

Sturdy hiking shoes are a must, as well as a jacket for the underground chill. Be prepared for slippery pavement and hundreds of steps. This adventure is not recommended for small kids or those with mobility concerns.

Getting there: You can visit Škočjan Caves on a day trip from Ljubljana by car. Buy tickets online or at the ticket office. Horse lovers may want to add a stop in nearby Lipica, home of the Lipizzaner horses you may have seen performing in Vienna. Bicycle tours of the karst region are another great option.

Pro tip: Allow some extra time for an extended hike through the karst landscape and the charming village of Škočjan. Hiking trails are well marked, starting from the end of the cave tour.

Pivka Cave: Adventure for Thrill Seekers

If you came to Slovenia for a high-octane adventure, you’re in luck. With a little planning ahead, you can book an adrenalin tour in the vast underground of Postojna Cave Park. All of the special equipment you will need is included in the price of the guided tour.

The Luka Čeč tour in Pivka Cave is named for the lamplighter who discovered the cave system in 1818, but toiled in poverty for decades before getting the credit he deserved. Be prepared for rappelling down rock faces, slogging through mud and paddling through an underground lake.

Book in advance to experience a thrill-seeking Slovenia cave adventure, like this tour of Pivka Cave. Photo courtesy Terry Anzur.

You also have a chance to spot the baby dragons and other unique cave species in their natural habitat. This adventure was so epic for my family of three that it deserves its own movie, as you’ll see in this video:

The Bat Cave under the Castle

A less demanding adventure allows you to explore the Windy Hole and other passageways underneath Predjama Castle. Different versions of this guided tour are suitable for older kids and teens.

But beware of bats! The consistent year-round temperature makes the castle caves a hibernating spot. Tours must be reserved in advance from May to September, when the bats are awake.

Pro tip: Fuel up for your adventure at Gostilna Požar, a friendly mid-priced restaurant serving Slovenian specialties with a picture-postcard view of Predjama Castle.

Idrija Mercury Mine: Underground History

History paired with caves in Slovenia! This tour covers 500 years of UNESCO world heritage in the 700 km of mercury mine tunnels underneath the town of Idrija. Anthony’s Shaft is the oldest preserved mine entrance in Europe.

The tour begins with a movie about the hard lives of the mercury miners. A guide wearing a mine foreman’s uniform takes you into the tunnels. You’ll see the numbered medallions miners wore during their shifts on the “death clock.” They stopped at an underground chapel to pray for a safe return.

Miners kept up their spirits with strong drink. They believed the mine was haunted by a mischievous elf who would lead them to the quicksilver — or worthless rocks. Idrija prospered as it became one of the largest mercury mines in the world. Unfortunately, the wealth did not trickle down to the poorly paid miners.

The miners worked without safety equipment until modern times. How many died from mercury poisoning and related illnesses? All of them. But you’ll be perfectly safe in the warm jacket and protective helmet included with the tour. Expect lots of walking on slippery surfaces and stairs.

Find out more in this video:

Idrija Dumplings and Lace

Above ground, the miners’ wives kept busy with lacemaking, a tradition that continues today. The handcrafted lace sold in the local shops makes a beautiful souvenir to take home.

Don’t forget to try the traditional Idrija dumplings called žlikrofi. Served with hearty sauce, they were a filling meal for the hard-working miners. The most popular restaurant is Gostilna Pri Škafarju, just a short walk from the entrance to the mine tour, but the dumplings are served in many of the local eateries.

Getting there: Idrija can be reached by car on a day trip from Ljubljana. Find tour times and ticket information on the website.

Pro tip: If you have more time, visit Gewerkenegg Castle, which looms over the narrow streets of the small, friendly town. It’s filled with exhibits about the history of mercury mining and lacemaking in Idrija.

Planning a trip to Slovenia? The biggest mistake you can make is not allowing enough time for all of the nature and history that is packed into this small country – the caves in Slovenia in particular. It’s a miniature version of Europe in one clean, green, sustainable package.

Dobrodošli! Welcome.

Or how many candles are on the birthday cake…
One reason your body feels like it’s falling apart…
And you have less “get up and go”…
Where you feel like crap rolling out of bed in the morning…
Has to do with a “lethal” cannibal-like chemical pumping through your bloodstream right now that…
Turning those once rock-hard bulges in your arms, pecs, and abs… into a soft and squishy mess…4
Picking at your masculinity like vultures on a pile of roadkill.
Look no further than the cannibal chemical you’ll discover on this page.
Starting today you can…
What you’re about to discover has NOTHING to do with pills or powders…
Following strict crash diets…
Hitting the gym or pounding the pavement even more…
And as crazy as it sounds… you won’t need any additional willpower or self-discipline either.
This strange anabolic “candy” contains a key nutrient backed by a breakthrough study in the American Journal of Men’s Health…
And you’re going to do backflips when you learn…
Is giving men of all ages, especially over 45…
Permission to replace cabinets full of expensive herbal pills.
So don’t let those clever men’s performance ads or commercials fool you…
Reclaiming your masculinity doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive, or humiliating…
I was just as skeptical as you probably are right now…
I’ve been into fitness for as long as I can remember…
So I’ve seen just about every gimmick you can imagine…
Yet this is something completely different…
The research behind this age-defying secret is incredible…
That if this specific nutrient wasn’t backed by the head integrative medicine specialist at a major University Research Clinic…11
A university hospital ranked top 5 in the world…12
And responsible for some of the country’s biggest health breakthroughs…
I wouldn’t have believed it for myself.
Especially when combined with any sort of well-rounded health regimen you may be following.
This BREAKTHROUGH will be your new secret weapon to help:
But it’s important you stay locked in right here and now. With…
It’s on Big Corporation’s radar.
Those fat cats want men fat, weak, and running on empty…
And if recent events tell us anything about Big Corp…
It’s that they want to steal your freedom of choice too…
So it’s only a matter of time before they try to silence the growing excitement around this anabolic loophole by whatever means necessary…
So keep reading because I’m not sure how much longer this information will be free.
But first, let me quickly introduce myself, then uncover…
Hey, I’m John Shumate…
A 64 year-old personal trainer…
I used to be a director for the world’s top muscle building and fat loss information site— bodybuilding.com…
More recently I’ve been recognized as a top celebrity trainer in India…
Helping actors shred fat and build muscle FAST for big screen roles…
The actors in India don’t eat nearly as much protein as action-hero celebrities in the states…
Plus they eat a ton of soy…
Both of which you’d assume would hold them back from getting ripped…
So what’s their secret to a rock-solid physique?
I’m going to reveal the little-known trick they use to get into cover-model shape on this page…
But first, let me address the pink elephant in the room.
I’m as natural as the horses on my western Kentucky ranch…
And not only do I have to keep my testosterone and energy high to wrangle the cattle on my 12 acre property…
But I’ve got a hot wife who’s 23 years younger than me…
So you better believe I’ve tried everything to stay at the top of my game naturally. And…
Is neutralizing the cannibal chemical wreaking havoc inside your body right now.
You’ve been fussing with this underlying problem forever and I bet you’re sick of it. HERE’S HOW YOU KNOW:
Well, maybe you can believe the Mayo Clinic…14 Or research teams from the University of North Carolina…15
Or the white coats from Harvard…16
Because they all suggest this cannibal chemical is sabotaging men 45+…
It’s a hormone called cortisol.
You’ve probably heard of cortisol before…
But most men don’t know just how detrimental it can be for guys in our age bracket.
Cortisol is an ancient “survival” hormone…
It’s what triggers the “fight-or-flight” response in us. If it didn’t…
Early humans would’ve been nothing more than ready-made meals for prehistoric predators…
But thanks to cortisol… Our ancient ancestors were able to 1) pick up their spears and fend-off these wild beasts, or 2) get the hell out of dodge before becoming a late night snack.
So you might be thinking…
Cortisol is a very POWERFUL hormone. However…
It’s only designed to be released in short bursts for a very limited amount of time…
Mainly, when you’re in DANGER…
And that’s when your adrenal glands pump-out cortisol.
Cortisol sends signals to your hypothalamus…
The “command center” of your brain…
To shut down other bodily functions like your immune, digestive, and reproductive system (where your testosterone is made)…
So it can focus all of its attention on survival.
I’ll share exactly how cortisol impacts your masculinity in a minute. But first…
Here’s where the problem lies…
You don’t see any sabertooth tigers roaming the streets, right?
We’ve got cushy warm homes to keep warm during winter, yes?
Yet our hard-wired survival hormone cortisol has remained the same…
Meaning whenever you’re stressed…
Your body still thinks it’s a “life or death” situation. So when you:
Your body reacts as if you’re being chased by a lion…
And dumps cortisol into your bloodstream to help you “survive”…
And being in this state consistently is a recipe for disaster. Because…
Think of cortisol’s relationship with testosterone like a gas and break.
Testosterone is the accelerator pedal… Accelerating your muscle gains and fat burning…*
Boosting your energy levels and supporting sex drive…*
It’s the ultimate fountain of youth for every red-blooded male.
And virtually puts a dead stop on testosterone production at first…
And then may contribute to LOWER testosterone production over time.
The #1 ranked hospital in the world and scientific publications in journals like Endocrine Connections…
Along with researchers from the department of Exercise and Sports Science lab at a prestigious University in North Carolina reported:
“Human research has shown the administration of cortisol into circulation at rest will result in reduced blood testosterone levels.”18 Basically… Studies show cortisol levels increase as we get older…20 21
And that’s in part because over time… stress accumulates.
After you turned 18 you started paying your own bills…
Maybe went through marital troubles or even a divorce…
And all of this builds on top of one another, brick by brick…
And contributes to boosted cortisol levels…
So by the time you’re 45+… your cortisol levels are MUCH higher than they used to be…
Which may help explain why your testosterone levels are lower than they used to be. And…
Studies show cortisol eats away at muscle mass and makes men weaker with age.22
Cortisol is a catabolic hormone…
“Catabolic” is where we get the word “cannibal”…
Meaning it breaks down your body’s own muscle tissue…
So when your cortisol levels are “up”…
Your body literally cannibalizes… eating away at your muscles for energy…
And speeding up age-related muscle loss. In fact…
A study from the Netherlands found that men with higher cortisol levels were up to 2x as likely to lose muscle strength compared to guys with lower cortisol levels.23
Which is why after 45 it seems like fat piles on fast and refuses to come off…
Cortisol specifically contributes to STUBBORN FAT.
Studies show when your cortisol levels increase… it causes a higher amount of stubborn fat to store.24 25 Meaning…
You could have two 180 lb guys who eat the same diet and follow the same training program. And…
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg…
Because stubborn fat grows “cortisol receptors”…
Which are like tiny magnets that attract even more fat-storing cortisol to those problem areas…
Signaling to your body to store even more fat. See…
All fat cells start out as “baby” fat cells…
Meaning they’re small cells that can potentially burn easily. However…
When cortisol levels increase…
It turns those easy-to-burn “baby” fat cells into mature, lazy “couch potato” fat cells…26
Making them seemingly impossible to shake. So basically…
For centuries doctors blamed muscle loss, stubborn fat, and other undesired-effects on “regular aging”…
Believing that every guy would eventually get pulled into this downward spiral sometime after turning 45…
Feeling trapped in a body they hate…
Losing confidence every time they looked in the mirror…
Blaming themselves for not being “disciplined” enough…
Or being cursed with “bad” genetics…
But science has finally caught up…
And researchers are now pointing the finger at the real culprit — cortisol…
There’s a simple way to help curb the cortisol problem…
Which will be like releasing the “parking brake” on your testosterone… *
And provide support that will help you build muscle, torch fat, and revive the college-jock energy you once had… *
And it’s something you’ll look forward to doing every night before bed…
And speaking of the bedroom…
Because studies show that when men are stressed…
It can contribute to lower libido and other occasional “performance issues”…27 28
And that’s because when your cortisol levels increase…
Your blood vessels “tighten up” which may limit blood from getting where it needs to be.
When was the last time you weren’t in the mood for sex?
You were probably stressed about work, had an argument with your spouse or just had lots on your mind…
I can promise you the situation triggered a cortisol release which is why you weren’t “in the mood.” And…
They have naturally higher cortisol levels.29
It’s the same reason women have a harder time losing weight than men. They have higher levels of this fat-storing hormone.
Now it’s starting to make sense, right?
When cortisol is released…
It causes a catabolic-chain reaction…
Which tells your body to “power down” like a cell phone in airplane mode…
… just “survive.” Nothing more.
Because naturally rising cortisol levels turn you into a shell of the man you once were…
It can affect your marriage…
You don’t have the energy to run around with your kids…
Let alone muster up the motivation to workout…
Your body goes from young, spry, and muscle-packed…
To soft, doughy, and weak.
I hope you’re putting two–and-two together…
This cortisol-testosterone connection fits like a glove.
One of the biggest mistakes guys make when learning about cortisol is they go on Google and look for ways to lower it…
It’s blog post after blog post on meditation, yoga, calming teas, breathing exercises…
Sure, that could help for like 2-minutes during your lunch break…
But it’s just not effective to escape the cortisol cycle you’re trapped in.
So let’s set the expectation…
But here’s the good news…
You don’t need to eliminate stress entirely to calm cortisol and break out of the muscle-wasting energy-drain you’re handcuffed in.
Instead, do what research from the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and dozens of other Universities points to around this key nutrient and…
And you’ll calm daily cortisol levels…*
Finally help “release” the excess trapped fat that’s been “immune” to diet and exercise…*
Support rebuilding lost muscle mass… *
And naturally support a surge in your T levels… *
So you can enjoy all the benefits of this man-boosting youth hormone at the gym, the boardroom, and in the bedroom. *
It’s really that powerful…
I learned this was one of their premier ways to help maintain high testosterone levels…*
Pack on muscle, support shredding fat, and staying sharp mentally… *
And do it all despite the large amounts of soy they get in their diet…
And how little protein they eat…
Both of which would normally seem like it’d make it impossible for a guy to have vigorous T-levels.
But the reason it still works…
Is because this “anabolic candy” helps to properly balance cortisol levels… *
Making it an easy way for you to build muscle, get stronger, and support eliminating excess fat… *
And support a boost in vigorous testosterone levels with nearly boundless energy… *
And the kind of libido that keeps her purring in your arms. *
This herb is famously nicknamed the “strength of the stallion” in India…
Ayurvedic medicine calls it a “Rejuvenator Tonic” because it…30 *
The scientific name is withania somnifera…32
Withania somnifera is an adaptogen…
And just like the name suggests…
An “adaptogen” is a natural substance that helps your body adapt to stress… *
In other words… it helps “bring down” your cortisol levels until you actually need them.*
So it’s no shock that one of the most prized benefits of withania somnifera…
Is a noticeable reduction in feelings of minor daily stress and a boost in mood to help combat the “cannibal chemical” cortisol. *
A groundbreaking new study published in the journal Medicine…
Used a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study…
Which is the gold-standard of any experiment you can do…
To examine the effects of withania somnifera on 60 stressed-out adults for 60 days…
They either took a placebo or 240 mg of withania somnifera once a day.
No changes to their lifestyle…
No meditation, breathing techniques, yoga, or any other time-consuming methods…
And the results showed…
And while that alone was impressive…
If those kinds of results happen with just 240 mg of withania somnifera…
And that’s when I stumbled on a handful of studies that showcased just how powerful this herb really is.
A study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition upped the dosage to 600 mg of withania somnifera to see how it would affect men with their muscle mass, recovery, strength, and T-levels…
In this 8-week gold standard study…
57 men were separated into two groups…
A placebo group… and a group taking 300 mg of withania somnifera, twice a day…
Here are the results of the withania somnifera group from the research team: And after researchers from the University of California studied this powerful herb, they suggested it’s a “loophole” to help dodge muscle loss as you get older, saying… *
“This means while withania somnifera is promoting growth pathways, it’s also reducing the activation of pathways which break down muscle”… 40 *
It’s addition without subtraction…
You can support building muscle without the catabolic hormone, cortisol, breaking it down. *
A 2019 study published in the American Journal of Men’s Health…
Ran a 16-week gold standard study comparing the fashion effect of withania somnifera on testosterone levels in overweight men ages 40-70 years old…
And found that on average…
There are dozens of studies I can mention…
This herb is literally backed by hundreds of research papers now. However…
One final study I’ll mention was published in the National Library of Medicine…
It was a study with 58 participants…
Those who took 250 or 600 mg of withania somnifera extract for 8 weeks…
Had significantly reduced perceived stress… *
And lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol compared with those who took a placebo… *
And the group that took 600 mg of withania somnifera had the lowest cortisol levels of the 3 groups…42*
So as you can see withania somnifera is a powerful herb.
This herb alone tastes like an ashtray.
In India you’d take this herb, melt it into an extract, pour it into water or tea, stir and drink…
And some guys have to work themselves up for 10-minutes just to get it down.
And if it’s hardly palatable for them…
Imagine how our Western-diet taste buds will handle it.
Plus boiling down withania somnifera makes it hard to measure if you’re really getting the science-backed dosages I mentioned above, which is key…
So I set out to find a simple, enjoyable way to consume this herb daily…
Without the awful taste or hassle of having to boil it down into a tea.
I’m not a big fan of pills…
But hey, I am a closet “candy nut”…
And I got this crazy idea…
I mean, you see gummy vitamins on shelves at the store all the time for kids…
So with a little innovation… it should be possible to take this putrid tasting powerhouse herb…
And turn it into an enjoyable experience like eating gummy candy at a movie theater.
So after some digging I finally connected with a specialty manufacturer who does just that…
They take hard to eat vitamins or herbs…
And put them through a unique process…
Infusing the science-backed dosages into an enjoyable, pleasant tasting gummy while maintaining its potency…
And that’s how we were able to create the world’s first “Anabolic Candy” called…
TestoChews is the first and only “anabolic candy” for men who want to raise testosterone, build head-turning muscle, torch stubborn fat, and feel energized almost like a kid again…*
By eating a sweet, chewy, gummy candy before bed.
Each piece of this “anabolic candy” contains a potent 750mg dose of withania somnifera…
To battle back against elevated cortisol levels… *
Fight the “shrinkage” in your muscles… *
And release the “death grip” that stubborn fat has had on your body all these years.*
Plus… to make TestoChews an even greater force to be reckoned with…
The first is vitamin D…
Vitamin D plays a role in 1,000+ functions in your body… including testosterone production… *
And studies suggest that men with higher vitamin D levels have higher testosterone levels.43 *
Many men our age are deficient in vitamin D…44 45
Meaning you aren’t getting enough of this vitamin into your diet to reap the benefits…
You can easily help make up the difference with TestoChews…
Because one study published in the journal Hormone and Metabolic Research found that men who took 3000 IUs of vitamin D every day for a year…
And inside TestoChews… we have a 4000 IU dose of vitamin D inside every chewy candy.
The second vitamin we added to TestoChews is zinc…
One study from Wayne State University School of Medicine found men who didn’t get enough zinc in their diets saw as much as a 74% drop in testosterone…47
And supplementing with zinc is especially important if you like to workout… or if you plan on starting a new exercise routine…
Because you lose zinc through sweat… which can contribute to lower testosterone levels if you don’t get enough zinc in your diet…
But supplementing with zinc like you’ll do with every bite-sized gummy inside TestoChews…
You can quickly help replenish your zinc levels and keep your testosterone in good shape. 49 *
Using TestoChews is so much easier than trying to get ashwagandha, zinc, and vitamin D into your diet through even more bland, boring, and bitter foods…
And it’s a LOT more enjoyable than swallowing a handful of horse pills every day.
And when you finally put your cortisol levels in their proper place… *
You’ll feel a night-and-day difference.
Instead of occasionally waking up tired and running on fumes… *
You’ll have youthful energy that keeps you moving, working, and getting stuff done. *
Instead of feeling like you want to lay around and spend your evenings on the couch…
You’ll feel a renewed surge of motivation to hit the weights… *
And you’ll actually see results this time around… *
Because cortisol is less likely to eat your muscle or cause you to store more fat. *
And instead of feeling down in the dumps…
Like a “has been” who’s past his prime…
You’ll feel confident with all of that fresh testosterone pulsing through your veins… *
And it only goes “up” from there…
It’s amazing to think what something like a piece of “candy” can do nowadays…
But you can expect all of that and more when you make TestoChews a part of your evening routine…
And I want to remind you that even though you and I may be THRILLED about it…
Big Corporation is NOT. Truth is…
They would rather keep you held down…
Because they make a lot of money off guys 45+ who just want to feel like themselves again…
Big Corporation’s methods don’t always address problems. Sometimes they just create new ones. But…
So let’s just say if Big Corporation finds out about our anabolic candy… they might start head-hunting… Plus with everything going on in the world…
It’s crucial to take action while you can…
Because you never know if some major event may shake things up… make it harder to get the ingredients… or slow down our ability to produce TestoChews as quickly as we can right now.
I bet you’re chompin’ at the bit to get these powerful little gummies on your nightstand…
In today’s economy every dollar matters…
And if you were to try and buy the ingredients inside TestoChews separately…
Plus, it’s a hassle trying to keep track of several different supplements. But…
With TestoChews you get the exciting cortisol curbing and testosterone boosting power of the research-backed dose of withania somnifera, vitamin D, and zinc all in one simple, fruity bite. *
TestoChews is a brand new innovation in men’s health…

If you’re still wondering if TestoChews is right for you…
I want to break down your options as clearly as I can…
You can forget the information you learned today… based on individual ingredient research by top universities and medical clinics…
About how the “cannibal-like” chemical, cortisol…
Is the biggest threat to your masculinity…
And has been one of the hidden contributors behind your borderline-invincible fat…
A factor in muscle loss…
And lack of energy and motivation.
You can continue down the long, boring road paved with bones that most men take after hitting 45…
Where you settle for being a shell of the man you used to be… and a fraction of the man you want to be.
If you choose this option, you’ll have to look yourself in the mirror everyday questioning if you made the right decision…
you’ll still suffer with a lack of self confidence…
you’ll have to live with the consequences of inaction…
But it won’t only affect you…
What about your wife and kids… what will THEY think?
Your wife is still a woman with real sexual attraction and desires…
Do you think you’ll keep her attention if your body keeps expanding from this fat-storing hormone?
Do you think she’ll put up with it forever?
What will your kids think when their friends’ dads are out playing ball with them…
But carrying all your extra body fat in the hot sun makes you call it quits after 5-minutes?
And don’t you want to be the “fun” grandpa when they have kids of their own…
To be able to run in the yard… play in the pool… and be a big and strong role model for them?
No guy wants to deal with the consequences of choosing to “do nothing”…
So this first option is a “no go”…
You can take everything you learned today about cortisol and your masculinity…
Try to fight the battle without a sword and shield.
You can follow the little breathing exercises or meditation…
But 2-minutes later you’ll be back to the blood-boiling reality of whatever was stressing you out before.
You can spend more money trying to get the ingredients inside TestoChews separately…
Which will cost you more money…
And who wants to swallow a handful of pills when they could just pop a piece of candy in their mouth?
And even then, you run the risk of getting the wrong ingredients with ineffective dosages…
That’ll leave you no better off than you were before.
That’s a lot of hassle and much more expensive for little or potentially no results…
Which is why this second option doesn’t make much sense either…
All you have to do is eat one delicious piece of our TestoChews anabolic candy before bed…
And you’ll begin to support the proper balance between cortisol and testosterone… *
And as your cortisol levels go down and your testosterone levels go up… *
You’ll see remarkable changes to your body and life. *
You’ll wake up with energy almost like a teenager… but with the wisdom of a guy who’s been around the block a few times… *
And carry that “alpha” feeling and with you virtually all day… *
You’ll have more aggression in the gym to crush the weights and push yourself harder than most guys half your age… *
And the muscles on your chest, shoulders, and arms will swell up like inflatable balloons. Plus… *
The stubborn pockets of fat will melt away FAST when added to your solid diet and exercise regimen… *
Feel better in your office uniform…
And with a chiseled upper body…
You’ll look DAMN GOOD when the shirt comes off.
Your wife will praise you for how you’ve taken charge of your health…
And “reward” you in more ways than one. And…
Yeah, they’ll think you’re a badass… (though they might hesitate to say the “A-word” in front of you)…
Because that’s what everyone thinks of fit older guys…
Whether you’re just starting to get that “salt and pepper” look in your beard…
Or you’re a “silver fox” stud that refuses to quit.
And isn’t it crazy that all of that’s achievable by eating a piece of “candy” before bed?
We live in crazy times…
But it ain’t ALL bad…
So if you want to calm your cortisol and unleash your testosterone… and experience all the perks reserved for guys who take charge of their masculinity… *
This is the best option for you.
So don’t wait any longer…
Especially while you can claim your bottles of TestoChews for a huge discount… with FREE shipping… and 100% risk-free.
