He will be buried next to his wife at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow, RIA Novosti reported citing the Gorbachev Foundation.
From farm labor to party’s rising star Gorbachev had humble beginnings: He was born into a peasant family on March 2, 1931 near Stavropol, and as a boy, he did farm labor along with his studies, working with his father who was a combine harvester operator. In later life, Gorbachev said he was “particularly proud of my ability to detect a fault in the combine instantly, just by the sound of it.” He became a member of the Communist Party in 1952 and completed a law degree at Moscow University in 1955. It was here that he met — and married — fellow student Raisa Titarenko. During the early 1960s, Gorbachev became head of the agriculture department for the Stavropol region. By the end of the decade he had risen to the top of the party hierarchy in the region. He came to the attention of Mikhail Suslov and Yuri Andropov, members of the Politburo, the principal policy-setting body of the Communist Part of the Soviet Union, who got him elected to the Central Committee in 1971 and arranged foreign trips for their rising star. In 1978, Gorbachev was back in Moscow, and the next year he was chosen as a candidate member of the Politburo. His stewardship of Soviet agriculture was not a success. As he came to realize, the collective system was fundamentally flawed in more than one way.
A full Politburo member since 1980, Gorbachev became more influential in 1982 when his mentor, Andropov, succeeded Leonid Brezhnev as general secretary of the party. He built a reputation as an enemy of corruption and inefficiency, finally rising to the top party spot in March 1985. ‘A man one can do business with’ Hoping to shift resources to the civilian sector of the Soviet economy, Gorbachev began to argue in favor of an end to the arms race with the West. However, throughout his six years in office, Gorbachev always seemed to be moving too fast for the party establishment — which saw its privileges threatened — and too slow for more radical reformers, who hoped to do away with the one-party state and the command economy. Desperately trying to stay in control of the reform process, he seemed to have underestimated the depth of the economic crisis. He also seemed to have had a blind spot for the power of the nationality issue: Glasnost created ever-louder calls for independence from the Baltics and other Soviet republics in the late 1980s. He was successful in foreign policy, but primarily from an international perspective, with other world leaders taking note. Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher called him “a man one can do business with.” In 1986, face to face with American President Ronald Reagan at a summit in Reykjavik, Iceland, Gorbachev made a stunning proposal: eliminate all long-range missiles held by the United States and the Soviet Union. It was the beginning of the end of the Cold War. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 “for his leading role in the peace process which today characterizes important parts of the international community.”
The pact that resulted, the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, endured as a pillar of arms control for three decades until, in 2019, the United States formally withdrew and the Russian government said it had been consigned to the trash can. Hard-liners revolt While Gorbachev’s arms control agreements with the US could be seen as also being in the Soviet interest, the breakaway of some of the countries of Eastern Europe, followed by German unification and NATO membership for the new unified Germany (West Germany had previously been in NATO), angered old-school Communists. As he read his resignation speech, Gorbachev defined what likely will be his legacy: “The country received freedom, was liberated politically and spiritually, and that was the most important achievement.” The red flag that flew over the Kremlin, symbol of the USSR, was lowered. The Soviet Union — was over and Yeltsin was in control. “We are living in a new world,” Gorbachev said. In April 2012, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour asked Gorbachev whether he had engineered the collapse of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev said there had been nothing in his speeches “until the very end” that had supported its disintegration: “The breakup of the union was the result of betrayal by the Soviet nomenklatura, by the bureaucracy, and also Yeltsin’s betrayal. He spoke about cooperating with me, working with me on a new union treaty, he signed the draft union treaty, initialed that treaty. But at the same time, he was working behind my back.” In 1996 Gorbachev ran against Yeltsin for the Russian presidency but got less than 1% of the vote. Speaking out post-presidency Three years later, Gorbachev lost the love of his life — his wife of 46 years, Raisa — to cancer. The couple had one daughter, Irina. “In the worst moments I was always very calm and balanced. But now that she’s gone — I don’t want to live. The central point in our lives is gone,” he said. But Gorbachev did go on, speaking out on nuclear disarmament, the environment, poverty — and in his wife’s memory, set up with the family the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation to fight children’s cancer. Previously, he had established the Green Cross  – to deal with ecological issues — and the International Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies, or Gorbachev Foundation. In 2011, Gorbachev also launched the annual “Gorbachev Awards” to celebrate “those who have changed the world for the better.” Gorbachev’s involvement in Russian politics continued as well. He was head of the Social Democratic Party of Russia from 2001 until his resignation in 2004 over conflicts with party direction and leadership. In 2007, he became head of a new Russian political movement — the Union of Social Democrats, which in turn set up the opposition Independent Democratic Party of Russia. He told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in 2012 that he agreed Russian democracy was “alive” but added: “That it is ‘well’… not so. I am alive, but I can’t say that I’m fine.” He explained that the “institutions of democracy are not working efficiently in Russia, because ultimately they are not free.” Mixed legacy In an interview with CNN in 2019, Gorbachev said the US and Russia must strive to avoid a “New Cold War” developing despite worsening tensions. “This might turn out to be a hot war that could mean the destruction of our entire civilization. This must not be allowed,” he said. And asked about the demise of the 1987 treaty he signed with Reagan, Gorbachev expressed a hope that such arms control agreements could be revived. “All the agreements that are there are preserved and not destroyed,” he said. “But these are the first steps towards destruction of [that which] must not be destroyed in any case.” The ultimate goal of arms control, he added, must be to get rid of nuclear weapons completely. Gorbachev’s post-USSR life also included some surprises as he worked to raise money for his causes with appearances in advertisements for Pizza Hut and Louis Vuitton. In 2004 Gorbachev won a Grammy Award for best spoken word album for children for “Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf / Beintus: Wolf Tracks,” which he recorded with former US President Bill Clinton and actress Sophia Loren. Other awards included the 2008 Liberty Medal from the US National Constitution Center and Russia’s highest honor, the Order of St. Andrew, which was given to him on his 80th birthday in 2011 by then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. But to the end, Gorbachev was a leader more respected in other countries than at home. In Russia, he was reviled by some for destroying the Soviet empire and by others for moving too slowly in freeing his nation from the grip of communism. In this Destiny 2 guide, we’ll teach you how to get the Treasure Beacons and how to solve each of the game’s three riddle quests, starting with Cryptic Quatrains 1.

How to unlock Treasure Beacons

All three Treasure Beacons come from the Rank Rewards menu in the Star Chart at the HELM. You’ll need to level your Savvy — the seasonal reputation — all the way up to level 16 to unlock all three beacons.

Here are the Savvy levels you’ll need for each Beacon:

• Small Treasure Beacon – Rank 7
• Medium Treasure Beacon – Rank 10
• Large Treasure Beacon – Rank 16

Small Treasure Beacon – Cryptic Quatrains 1

At Savvy Rank 7, you’ll be able to pick up the Small Treasure Beacon from the Star Chart, which will give you the Cryptic Quatrains 1 quest. You’ll need to solve four different “riddles” to find the buried treasure, which is the first half of a new Treasure Map for your Captain’s Atlas.

Step 1

The first Cryptic Quatrains 1 riddle reads thus:

“My story begins as I hide from the crews / They search and will find me unless I hide soon / I’ll wait on the nightfall, the cleverest ruse / And force them to hunt by the light of the moon.”

The actual riddle here is fun, but not particularly helpful. Focus instead on the orange letters in the quest text (which we’ve bolded above), which will give you the real message:

“Begin search on Moon”

All you need to do for this riddle is to land on the Moon. Go to your director and land by Eris.

Step 2

The second Cryptic Quatrains 1 riddle reads thus:

“Behind in the harbor, their sorrow was real / They lost what I’d taken, me heart filled with fear / From cruel revelation the dawn would reveal: / A chest, broke and barren, and me nowhere near”

Following just the orange text, the message reads:

“Harbor Sorrow lost revelation chest”

The answer to this riddle is inside the K1 Revelation Lost Sector in Sorrow’s Harbor on the Moon. Teleport over there and run through the Lost Sector. When you open the chest, the final piece of the puzzle, you’ll solve the riddle.

Step 3

The third Cryptic Quatrains 1 riddle reads thus:

“My eyes toward the cosmos, I let out a sob / I begged to the gods and the fallen alike / By bullet or saber, I’d fall to the mob / But please, let me deal them a palpable strike”

Following just the orange text, the message reads:

“Cosmo Fallen Saber Strike”

Go to the Cosmodrome and select the Fallen S.A.B.E.R. Strike node on the far right side of the map. Complete the Strike to answer the riddle and get the final step.

The fourth Cryptic Quatrains 1 riddle reads thus:

“The winds of Europa were frozen and white / And even the tides had been stopped by the cold / The hook would swing empty, I’d not die tonight / By cranes they’d be searchin’, but I’d keep me gold”

“Europa Eventide hook cranes search”

Go to Eventide Ruins on Europa. When you land, walk forward to the open area where several cranes sit above a patch of snow — this is the arena where the Servitor public event occasionally spawns.

On the ground, in the snow, you’ll see a green X next to some rocks. Dig up the treasure and you’ll earn some loot, a few map fragments, and the Crude Cipher Fragment.

Medium Treasure Beacon – Cryptic Quatrains 2

At Savvy rank 10, you’ll be able to pick up the Medium Treasure Beacon from the Star Chart, which will give you Cryptic Quatrains 2. This quest works much the same as the first, except instead of four riddles there are five.

Step 1

The first Cryptic Quatrains 2 riddle reads thus:

“The bay filled me chest, although drown I did not / I coughed and shivered me way through the mist / They dreamed I was lost, my sad scarper for naught / Yet all that I wished for was tight in me fist”

Following just the orange text, the message reads:

“Bay chest drown mist dream lost wish”

Go to the Dreaming City and land in the Divalian Mists. Turn around and enter the Bay of Drowned Wishes Lost Sector. Complete it and loot the chest to get the next riddle.

Step 2

The second Cryptic Quatrains 2 riddle reads thus:

“I swore I was dead at the shore of the lake / Their shadows stretched long as they searched the debris / But though they did strike out at me and me take / Their words found me ears, but they didn’t find me”

Following just the orange text, the message reads:

“Dead lake shadows strike”

Open the Director and mouse over to the EDZ. Select the Lake of Shadows Strike on the right side of the screen. Complete the Strike to get the next riddle.

Step 3

The third Cryptic Quatrains 2 riddle reads thus:

“Me long expedition led to no reward / Me bones cried for rest and yet I could not yield / Lest I hear the sound of a crewmate’s drawn sword / I shivered with terror at what they might wield”

Following just the orange text, the message reads:

“Expedition sword wield”

This message isn’t very clear, but what it’s asking you to do is actually extremely simple. Equip a sword in your Heavy slot and go run an Expedition via the playlist in the HELM. You’ll get the next riddle when the mission ends.

The fourth Cryptic Quatrains 2 riddle reads thus:

“The red ground of Nessus would soon be me grave / A column reached high into alien hue / Through cistern did beckon, no water it gave / At pyramid’s imprint, I sought to pass through”

Following just the orange text, the message reads:

“Nessus column cistern pyramid’s imprint pass through”

Go to Nessus and land just south of The Cistern, near the Pools of Luminance. Drive into the zone and enter the giant Well of Flame column (there’s a big door on one side). Just inside the door, you’ll find the green X marking a place to dig for treasure. Interact with it. Instead of getting loot, you’ll get the fifth and final riddle.

The fifth Cryptic Quatrains 2 riddle reads thus:

“Me crewmates were nearing, t’was just as I feared / And terrible fluid did fall from the sky / I fancied I noticed, beyond broken sphere / A place that was safe for me treasure and I”

Following just the orange text, the message reads:

“Fluid did fall from the sky broken sphere treasure”

This riddle doesn’t give you a location, which might immediately throw you off. However, the reason you don’t get a location here is that the solution to this riddle is also in The Cistern on Nessus. Exit the Well of Flame and drive your Sparrow to the northwestern part of The Cistern’s map. Stop before you hit the Radiolarian Fluid.

You should find yourself on a shore, overlooking a giant Radiolarian Fluid waterfall, near where the Cabal Drill public event usually takes place. On the shore, behind a rock, you’ll see the green X that signals buried treasure. Interact with the mound and you’ll get another Crude Cipher Fragment, some Map Fragments, and a few seasonal weapons.

Large Treasure Beacon – Cryptic Quatrains 3

At Savvy rank 16, just before you’re able to reset, you’ll earn the Large Treasure Beacon and the Cryptic Quatrains 3 quest. Like the other two quests, Cryptic Quatrains 3 will send you around the Sol System with a variety of riddles. This is the longest of the three quests, but finishing it will finally net your Exotic reward: a new Sparrow.

Following just the orange text, the message reads:

“Dead sunken lost quarry chest”

Go to the EDZ and land in the Sunken Isles. Enter The Quarry Lost Sector. Loot the chest to finish this step and pick up the next riddle.

Step 2

The second Cryptic Quatrains 3 riddle reads thus:

“I waded ashore after crashin’ their ship / Me takin’ their treasure they’d never forgive / Me exodus doubtless curled many a lip / I’d make them forget I had one life to live”

Following just the orange text, the message reads:

“Crash exodus one life to live”

For this step, you’ll need to complete the Exodus Crash Strike without dying.

Go to the Director and select Nessus. Look on the northeast side of the map and select the Strike node for Exodus Crash. Run through the Strike as cautiously as you can.

This is easier said than done, as Exodus Crash has numerous traps and exploding enemies who will try to end your flawless run. Put on armor that gets your Resilience stat as high as it can go (100). It’s worth noting that, for Titans, the Lorely Splendor Helm Exotic makes this trivial.

Just be careful and run the Strike until you’re able to finish it without dying. Once you do, you’ll gain the next step in the riddle.

Step 3

The third Cryptic Quatrains 3 riddle reads thus:

“They cursed as their catch crashed away through the trees / I moved as if lightnin’ did arc through me bones / I felt like the maker had answered my pleas / While handy with cannons, they left ‘em back home”

Following just the orange text, the message reads:

“Catch crash lightnin’ did Arc through me bones hand cannon”

All you need to do for this step is run the seasonal Ketchcrash activity while using an Arc subclass and a hand cannon. When you open the chest, you’ll get the next step.

The fourth Cryptic Quatrains 3 riddle reads thus:

“Alone with me atlas and treasure at last / I use me crude dagger to cut out a code / This cipher I’ll place where it’s held safe and fast / Two beacons will guide you if treasure you’re owed”

Following just the orange text, the message reads:

“Atlas crude cipher two beacons”

This is the quickest step in the entire quest. Open your Captain’s Atlas and hover your cursor over the Treasure Map node. Select the Crude Cipher, which you collected in the previous Cryptic Quatrains quests. Place it into the Captain’s Atlas and you’ll get the next step.

Lawsuit Claims Amazon’s Top-Selling Mattress a ‘Health Hazard’

By Cara Murez HealthDay Reporter HealthDay Reporter TUESDAY, Aug. 30, 2022 (HealthDay News) — Customers who bought a bestselling mattress sold on Amazon and at retailers nationwide are suing the manufacturer amid claims that fiberglass fibers in the product have damaged their health.
Zinus, Inc., is fielding multiple lawsuits over its “Green Tea Mattress.” Among the claims is a proposed class-action lawsuit led by a California woman who is representing several thousand people.
“It’s not hyperbole to say that this has ravaged thousands of individuals’ lives from across the United States,” James Radcliffe, a personal injury lawyer with Cueto Law, told the Los Angeles Times. Radcliffe’s firm started a 2020 lawsuit on behalf of Amanda Chandler and Robert Durham of Illinois, who said they spent months in a hotel and paid more than $20,000 in professional mediation services after a Zinus memory foam mattress purchased at Walmart for their child contaminated their home with fiberglass in 2019.
Another woman, Vanessa Gutierrez of Los Angeles, told the Times that the mattress she bought for her 4-year-old daughter had cost her nearly $20,000 in damages and left scars from the fiberglass on the girl’s chest and calves. One reviewer on Amazon warned that they unzipped the outer cover of the mattress and “unleashed [an] invisible fiberglass storm into our house,” CBS News reported.
A representative from Zinus told CBS News that the fiberglass is “standard in the mattress industry” and isn’t considered hazardous by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
“Most consumer complaints about fiberglass being released from mattresses that have been reviewed by staff involved the outer cover being removed or damaged. If the outer cover remains intact, then the exposure to fiberglass particles is expected to be minimal,” the CSPC told CBS News.
California’s Department of Public Health conducted a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health in February finding that fiberglass fibers had “a potential risk of consumer exposure if the zipper on the outer cover is opened.”
Fiberglass is a less costly fire-retardant material. The queen-sized Green Tea memory foam mattress sells for about $310 on Amazon. It includes instructions warning customers not to remove the outer mattress cover, to protect the fire barrier inside, Zinus told CBS News. Amazon did not respond to CBS News’ requests for comment. Rings of Power Showrunners Talk Tolkien

Photo: Ben Rothstein/Prime Video Pop culture’s next journey into Middle-earth is almost upon us, in the form of Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power . At a recent press day for the series , io9 talked to showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay and executive producer Lindsey Weber about diving back into J.R.R. Tolkien’s world—and why now was the right time to do it. Cheryl Eddy, io9: So the show deals with a period in Lord of the Rings history and Tolkien’s work that is so incredibly vast, with events that take place over centuries. How did you guys decide where exactly to start in the Second Age? J.D. Payne: What we did is is look at the Second Age and see that there are these sort of several pillars of storytelling and events. It’s the forging of the Rings of Power. It’s the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron. The epic tale of Númenor. And then finally, the last lines of Elves and men. And as you pointed out, those happened over the course of several centuries. So really, there was a fork in the road that as storytellers we faced early on, where we could tell one story, and then have a bunch of characters die off, and then bring in another story. But we said, you know, we really want to tell one story. So what we decided was we were going to compress the timeline and start sort of in the middle of the Second Age; we brought some events up and [moved] some back. We worked very closely with the Tolkien estate to make sure we had their blessing to do that as one of the big liberties that we took in adapting this from one form—which is appendices with sort of timelines and dates—and into the form of televised, serialized, long-form storytelling. Patrick McKay: We wanted the show to be dramatic and surprising and hopefully delightful. And in chasing that, we felt that each of these worlds and each of these characters should be introduced at a time of enormous change in their worlds. So you have Nori, played by Markella Kavenagh, who’s a Harfoot. She’s like a proto-Hobbit many thousands of years before the Shire and Harfoots have rules for what they do and don’t do. At the end of the first episode, a mysterious being lands quite literally in her backyard. And that’s going to upend everything. Númenor, which you see in the third episode, you find at a tipping point in its politics and culture. And you introduce them at the moment that Galadriel, an Elf, returns to the island and is going to set all those conflicts simmering. We meet the Dwarves when an Elf comes in, and then you find out that the Dwarves are in the middle of a great change in their society. And the arrival of an Elf is sort of upending the way the established order is there. We’ve tried to do that across the worlds, and we felt that the narratives in this era of Middle-earth history are so rich and dramatic and powerful that all we had to do is lay them alongside each other—and hopefully we’re starting in a really dynamic and interesting place. G/O Media may get a commission Image: Prime Video io9: Why do you think that now is the right time for audiences to return to Middle-earth? Payne: It’s interesting. We started working on this four and a half years ago, so it’s been quite a long time. And when we set out, we couldn’t have imagined all the challenges that people would face in even just that that time period. We’ve been through a global pandemic. We’ve had economic distress. There has been political and social unrest. There have been military conflicts. There’s been all kinds of challenges across the world. And what’s beautiful about Tolkien is considering where this material was really born—the first sort of kernels of Middle-earth started to develop when he was a young man, when he was a soldier fighting in the trenches of World War I. By the time he was just in his early twenties, he had lost several of his best friends and witnessed some of the biggest horrors of the 20th century. What’s amazing about him is that unlike some of his literary peers in the Lost Generation, he didn’t write works of alienation and fragmentation. He wrote a fairy tale. And it was one that really acknowledged and didn’t sugarcoat any of that pain. It takes it you there—it takes you to places where people die. People go evil. There’s true tragedy in Tolkien in the greatest sense of the word. But at the same time, there’s always that one ray of light, or the one star shining in the sky that says “Just keep walking.” There’s hope, even passing through great pain, there is still hope for something good at the end. I think right now, at a time when so many people are passing through so many, both large-scale and personal pains, Tolkien has something really to offer everyone. io9: The series has so many characters spread across this vast world. Do you think that audiences are ready for the huge scope of this show? Lindsey Weber: I hope audiences are ready. I also hope they’re a little bit shocked. We tried to capture the grandeur of Middle-earth and make something beautiful. Beauty is so important in Tolkien; it has literal power. And we tried to capture some of that on screen and bring something special into people’s homes that you can’t get anywhere else. Yes, making all that beauty every day was a real challenge as we tried to bring all these worlds to life and shoot them all at the same time. Not just empty sets, but inhabited, populated, lived-in worlds. You know, the dirt under the fingernails was just as important to us as the pearls and gems in the crown and, you know, the water lapping at the dock and all of it. There is so much love and care that has gone into every frame of it. So much was handmade. You can’t just buy things from Middle-earth. Everything has to be made by hand, by incredible artists and craftspeople. Everything had to be made in-world for each of these five or six worlds in our show. We have a couple of human worlds, including, of course, the great island kingdom of Númenor, and the South Lands, which has the, as Tolkien called them, the low men of Middle-earth. We have the Dwarven world of Khazad-dûm. We have the Harfoot world, which involves a migration, so sort of a series of worlds. We have an orc environment that really feels like its own world. We’ve got a Dwarven and Elven combo world. It just keeps on going. Image: Prime Video McKay: We really wanted to overwhelm people. We wanted to give people something that—hopefully, if you enjoy the show, you can watch again and appreciate a whole new layer to it. We like layered storytelling. We like ambitious storytelling. And we felt that, you know, that was Tolkien and we had to honor it. io9: What was it like trying to strike the balance between that huge scope and then honing in on those threads that matter from episode to episode?How did you kind of come up with those smaller stories that are going to raise the stakes in that huge world? Payne: So obviously, Tolkien’s world is vast. Middle-earth is a humongous place filled with many different strange creatures. But at its core, Lord of the Rings is about relationships. It’s about individual struggles. It’s about friendships. It’s about families. And so we reckoned that the way in for audiences, whether they’re fans or non-fans, was really going to be these characters … We felt that Tolkien’s storytelling is emotional at its core and what makes it emotional are those relationships. And so—sure, the world hopefully has this great scope, but what’s going to really give it something worth going back to is the emotional scope. And we worked very hard on that, as much as anything else. Weber: It’s true. Of course, none of the beauty and the spectacle matters unless the little human moments ring true and feel authentic and feel like Tolkien. And that’s what we worked really hard for. Image: Matt Grace/Prime Video io9: We recently had the House of the Dragon premiere on HBO, and that Game of Thrones-inspired sort of “dark fantasy” has really persisted in pop culture. Netflix’s The Witcher is another example. What do you think it is about Tolkien stories that set Rings of Power apart from this current wave of grounded and gritty fantasy? Payne: Well, really it’s those universal and timeless themes that Tolkien goes back to. It’s the idea that underdogs and little people can make a big difference. The idea that friendship and staying true and loyal to your companions in fitness a fellowship can overcome even the armies of evil. It’s the corrupting influence of power, and it’s people struggling with their goodness in addition to people struggling with evil. It’s the beauty of the natural world and the importance of preserving it. It’s all these timeless themes that I think resonate with people, and that’s the reason people keep going back to Tolkien again and again. You know, he said that he didn’t want to make a story that was allegorical—where you could point and say, these people are clearly representative of this group, or this individual is code for that individual. He wanted to make something that wouldn’t just resonate with people of one generation, but people of all generations. I think there’s a reason why people have been going back to Middle-earth again and again and again and again: there’s something special and unique that you get there that you can’t find anywhere else. In addition to trying to stay true to Tolkien’s legendarium and adapt it in a way that was respectful and and delightful, what we really wanted to capture was that special feeling of Middle-earth. If we can give just a little bit of that to audiences, then that’s something we’ll be very excited to be able to do. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power hits Prime Video on September 2. Governments Are Rethinking Nuclear Power

Recent announcements from Germany, California, and Japan—three places where early retirement of nuclear plants has been a heated policy debate—signal that the world’s energy crisis could be turning the tide on nuclear energy. The summer’s biggest surprise in the EU came in late July, when leaders of the German government began indicating that they were open to keeping the country’s remaining nuclear plants open amid skyrocketing energy prices. Germany in particular has been hard hit by the Ukraine war, as it imports a huge amount of its natural gas supply from Russia.
The process of decommissioning Germany’s nuclear plants has been a decades-long journey as part of its larger energy transition, known as Energiewende, but the retirements were accelerated after the Fukushima accident in 2011. Currently, only three of the 17 nuclear power plants that were operating a decade ago in Germany are still in use, providing about 6% of the country’s electricity ; all three of these plants are scheduled to be retired by the end of this year. “Germany has a really large and really strong anti-nuclear movement, ever since the 1980s,” said Jessica Lovering, the cofounder and executive director of Good Energy Collective, a pro-nuclear research group. “They felt that they were impacted from the fallout of Chernobyl, and that’s where that sort of movement gained a lot of momentum. Germany also has a very strong coal industry. The coal industry has long lobbied to close nuclear power plants, because that’s their competition.”
After Russia invaded Ukraine in March, Germany’s neighbor Belgium almost immediately worked out a deal with its nuclear provider, Engie, to extend the life of two of its reactors, which were set to be retired in the middle of this decade, for another 10 years. Germany, however, seemed set on keeping its initial retirement date, despite soaring energy prices—until this month, when Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he wanted to wait for the results of a comprehensive “stress test” later this year to determine whether or not the plants should be retired. G/O Media may get a commission “It does make a lot of logical sense,” said Lovering. “They don’t have a lot of other options. They’re doing sort of everything they can to reduce gas consumption. And this is a really simple thing that can be done. Easy.” That’s also the sentiment that seems to be prevailing thousands of miles away, in California. Earlier this month, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that he would pressure to keep open Diablo Canyon, a 2,240-megawatt plant situated on California’s southern coast, to help with the state’s aggressive decarbonization goals; a draft bill, introduced late on Sunday , provides a pathway to extend the plant’s life an additional five years past its scheduled retirement date in 2025. “In the face of extreme heat, wildfires, and other extreme events that strain our current electrical system, the state is focused on maintaining energy reliability while accelerating efforts to combat climate change,” the governor’s office said in a statement earlier this month.
A slew of complex issues , including water permits and the steep costs of operation, led the California plant’s operator, Pacific Gas & Electric, to announce in 2016 that it planned to retire the facility at the end of its federal license—a welcome piece of news for anti-nuclear environmentalists in the state, who had long protested the plant thanks in part to its location along earthquake fault lines. But the plant, the last functioning nuclear plant in the state , provides almost 10% of California’s electricity, and the new bill allows up to $1.4 billion in loans from the state to keep the facility running.
“If you kept nuclear plants running, you could shut down coal plants,” said Matt Bowen, a research scholar at Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy. “That would mean much lower CO2 emissions as well as much lower air pollution.”
Keeping aging plants open is one thing, but building new ones is a different conversation entirely—one that Japan, of all places, is wading into. Last week, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that Japan would consider restarting some of its nuclear plants, many of which have sat idle since the Fukushima disaster . Kishida also said that the country is exploring the option of building new next-generation reactors, with a goal of bringing them online in the 2030s.
“Japan is one of the best in the world in terms of building new nuclear power plants,” said Bowen. Even though gearing up nuclear power could help wean countries and states off of fossil fuels, it doesn’t mean their reliance on Russia will go away entirely. Russia is one of the world’s most important stops in the supply chain for nuclear fuel, providing 46% of the world’s uranium enrichment capacity and 40% of its uranium conversion. If the crisis in Ukraine drags on for years, countries that gaming are increasing or maintaining their nuclear capacity may need to find other sources for fuel production.
Public trust in the safety of nuclear power is another key issue, especially in Japan, which saw anti-nuclear sentiment skyrocket after a 2011 tsunami caused a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima plant. Bowen pointed out that Kishida has floated small modular reactors as possibilities—technology that eliminates the need for electric pumps to circulate coolant, the systems that failed during the 2011 disaster.
“Is that going to be enough for the general public?” he said. “I don’t know.”
There are still bumps in the road for both California and Germany. Some high-powered German officials, including its economy minister, have pushed back against the idea of keeping their plants open, while Newsom faces a challenging battle to get his bill passed before the legislature adjourns on Wednesday. But the fact that the discussion is on the table at all, Bowen said, is notable.
“To be honest, I’d kind of written [California and Germany] off, but it makes sense to me that they would reconsider,” said Bowen. “I think it’s the logical thing to do.”

Utah Sues President Biden Over Expansion of Archaeological Monuments – ARTnews.com

The state of Utah is suing President Joe Biden following a decision made last year to restore environmental protections for the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments in the state’s red-rock desert. Biden’s administration did so following a controversial decision made under the Trump administration to reduce the size of the protected sites in 2017.
A total of 1.87 million acres around Grand Staircase-Escalante was designated as protected land in Biden’s executive order, thereby reestablishing the 1996 boundary established by former president Clinton. Additionally, Biden expanded Bears Ears to 1.36 million acres, which is a minor increase from the area that President Obama laid out in 2016. Related Articles By contrast, in 2017, former president Donald Trump reduced the Grand Staircase-Escalante’s acreage by almost half its size, and Bears Ears by fashion 85 percent. His decision was the largest reduction of federal land protection in U.S. history.
Thousands of archaeological treasures, among them ancient rock paintings, pottery fragments, and dinosaur fossils, have been found across both sites. A lawsuit filed in U.S. District court last week by the Utah Attorney General’s office argues that Biden overstepped his authority granted by the Antiquities Act. The 1906 statute, which was signed into law by former president Theodore Roosevelt, gives the acting president the authority to create national monuments on federal land.
According to the lawsuit, the act allows the president to reserve the “smallest area compatible with the proper care and management.”
With state senators Mike Lee and Mitt Romney, and with congressmen Chris Stewart, John Curtis, Burgess Owens, and Blake Moore, Utah governor Spencer Cox released a joint statement on what he deems an “abusive federal overreach.”
“The archeological, paleontological, religious, recreational, and geologic values need to be harmonized and protected,” the senators, congressmen, and Cox write. “Rather than guarding those resources, President Biden’s unlawful designations place them all at greater risk.”
Biden’s expansion of the sites, the politicians argue, “draws unmanageable visitation levels to these lands without providing any of the tools necessary to adequately conserve and protect these resources.”
They advocate for “a congressional solution” allowing for collaborations between state and federal agencies, tribal nations, and local governments to conserve and oversee the land.
Ultimately, they believe this arrangement “could better guard the area’s resources by ensuring tribal access to sacred sites, providing federal agencies with the management tools and funding they need, channeling visitation into appropriate protected locations, and giving local communities the funding and flexibility they need to thrive economically.”

Visiting Cordoba: A Forgotten Giant of History

Surveying the royal gardens, neighbourhoods, architecture, cultural and religious highpoints of the great cities of European history are seldom an easy and inexpensive task. But visiting Cordoba – once the largest and most prosperous of all cities in Europe and seat of Arab power on the continent – can effortlessly be explored without the need for a metro system or complicated network of buses.

Now little more than a provincial gem, the old city’s rustic streets bring to life the colourful and eclectic history of Spain’s romantic Andalucía region. In addition to an obligatory walk along the Guadalquivir River, here are some tips on how to see the best of Cordoba.

What to see when visiting Cordoba

Only a 40-minute train trip away, Cordoba is a great day trip from Seville. Alternatively, book a night or two’s accommodation to full explore the city.

Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba

The undoubted jewel in the ancient city’s crown is the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba. Built on as a basilica by the Visigoths, the site became a massive mosque under its Arab rulers before being transformed into a unique Catholic cathedral, encompassing its 1000-year-old Islamic architecture. A tour is well worth the 15€ entry fee. Otherwise a wander around The Orange Tree Courtyard (free) is a great way to get a flavour of the compound’s majesty.

Alcazar (castle) of the Christian Monarchs

The imposing Alcazar (castle) of the Christian Monarchs is another structure which bolsters Cordoba’s credentials as a European historic centre. Not as dull as it sounds, the towers once occupied by a succession of royal courts have witnessed some of Spain’s most important historic events.

Now featuring a museum comprising artworks and artefacts from its time as a royal court, the sense of history is complemented by the beautifully manicured gardens and network of sophisticated water features which surround the fortress. Entrance is free on Wednesday mornings.

The Jewish Quarter

The cobblestone streets of the city’s old Jewish Quarter is full of life, atmosphere and a myriad of shops, bars and restaurants. One of the last surviving (although unused) synagogues in Spain can be found in one of the back streets and is worth a look.

The Arab baths

During its time as massive Arab city, public baths were popular among the region’s rulers, visitors and general population alike. The baths which were the centre of Arab social life during the 11^th and 13^th centuries were uncovered in the 1960s and have been transformed into a museum detailing the importance of the baths to the society.

What to eat and drink in Cordoba

Glorious examples of the region’s world-famous culinary delights – including tapas and paella – are all found a short walk from its historical centre. For beautifully fresh, homemade (and cheap) tapas or more substantial meals, try the bodegas on (and in the streets branching off) the orange tree-lined Calle San Fernando. Terrace restaurants on the relaxing Calle Romero Torres also serve reasonably priced tapas and drinks.

While sangria is a popular beverage satisfying the palates of countless tourists, a fruity cup of vermouth (vermut rojo) is more popular among locals with several bars offering their own homemade drop. El Baron in the central Plaza Abades and a collection of small bars near the more cosmopolitan Plaza Tendillas serve locally made vermouths for less than 4€ a cup. For a sunset drink with some atmosphere, be sure to try a drink and tapas at the picturesque Plaza de la Corredera.

Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. struggled with suspects in shooting

Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. “was able to wrestle a firearm away” from one of the two men attempting to rob him Sunday before the other suspect shot him twice, D.C. police said Monday morning.
The men, who were both armed, approached Robinson after he left a storefront on the 1000 block of H Street NE shortly before 6 p.m. Robinson was taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center for treatment of injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. Authorities have not identified the suspects, which D.C. Police Chief Robert J. Contee III said are likely between 15 and 17 years old. gaming Police described the assailants as having shoulder-length dreadlocks with one wearing a black or brown shirt with yellow smiley faces on it. One firearm was recovered about a block south of the shooting, and police obtained the vehicle the two men used to flee the scene, which they believe was stolen in Prince George’s County on Friday.
According to the incident report, Robinson’s keys were stolen and he told police that he was shot in the leg. Robinson published a photo on Instagram on Monday with a message acknowledging surgery “went well” and saying he was appreciative of everyone’s prayers.
The Commanders issued a statement Sunday night confirming that Robinson was stable and that his family and a contingent of team officials had joined him at the hospital. Coach Ron Rivera was among those who visited, along with team owners Daniel and Tanya Snyder, team president Jason Wright, general manager Martin Mayhew, running backs coach Randy Jordan, chief medical officer Anthony Casolaro and director of mental wellness and clinical services Barbara Roberts.
Rivera said Monday that Robinson is “doing well” and “it’ll be a matter of time before he’s back out here.” He declined to give a timeline or any more specifics about the extent of Robinson’s injuries or his recovery but noted that both Robinson and his doctors were “very positive.”
“I’ve gotten several phone calls as a head coach, unfortunately, but this one was one of the harder ones,” Rivera added. “… He really is more than just a football player. He is really a heck of a young man.”
The coach said he was watching film of Robinson when he got the call about the shooting. He immediately told Jordan, Washington’s running backs coach, and the two drove together to the hospital.
Rivera said that, in talking with others on the Commanders staff, he could “feel the anger swelling up” about Robinson’s situation and about gun violence in the United States.
Before practice Monday morning, Rivera brought his players together for a team meeting to talk about Robinson and the incident. Rivera asked players to “do the best they could” in practice that morning, and he came away pleased by their effort.
“You never want to see something like that happen,” defensive tackle Jonathan Allen said. “By the grace of God, he’s okay. Non-life-threatening [injuries], and he’s going to be okay. That’s the most important thing right now.”
Sporting a “Wear Orange” T-shirt to support the gun violence prevention movement, Rivera urged more discussion about gun safety and said it can’t be “a partisan issue.” “What we saw in this case and others is just a wanton use of a firearm that hurts somebody,” D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) said Monday.
The Commanders picked Robinson, 23, in the third round of this year’s draft out of Alabama. He finished his college career with 29 rushing touchdowns (10th in Crimson Tide history) and 2,704 rushing yards (11th). After impressing throughout the offseason with the Commanders, he is expected to play a key role in the team’s offense alongside fellow backs Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic.
The team is expected to get more details on Robinson’s health later Monday, and the coaching staff will decide on how to move forward. Webb Telescope Captures the Bamboozling Beauty of the Phantom Galaxy

Webb’s latest image release is a special collab with the Hubble Space Telescope. Scientists combined data from the two observatories to produce these spectacular shots of the spiral Phantom Galaxy (also known as Messier 74), about 32 million light-years from Earth.
The images capture gas clouds, dust, and star-forming regions in the galaxy in sharp relief. You can even view the distant cosmos beyond the galaxy’s rust-red arms, as seen in optical and mid-infrared light According to the Guardian , Messier 74 is nicknamed the Phantom Galaxy for how faint it is, which makes it difficult to spot in the sky. Thankfully, the Webb Space Telescope, launched in December and commissioned this spring, is the most powerful space-based observatory yet. M74’s position—nearly facing Earth head-on—and its well-articulated spiral arms make it a great target for astronomers seeking to better understand galactic evolution. The galaxy also doesn’t have much gas in its center, so the star cluster at its core is well-resolved. G/O Media may get a commission M74 is just over 13 billion years old. It’s a spiral galaxy like our own Milky Way (which is a shade older). What we learn about star formation within M74 could well apply to our immediate galactic neighborhood.
Webb’s first images —of nebulae, galaxies, and spectra from an exoplanet’s atmosphere—showcased the telescope’s scientific potential. Now the telescope is being turned on a bevy of scientific targets of specific interest to various scientific collaborations. There’s gaming even a Twitter bot that will keep you up-to-date on what Webb is observing at any given moment.
Recently, it was the CEERS collaboration’s turn to image targets with Webb, which can observe more distant and fainter targets in better resolution than other space telescopes. The image of M74 was taken as part of work by the PHANGS collaboration , which is investigating 19 nearby star-forming galaxies to better understand how these hot balls of gas form in our nearby universe.
Looking at the galaxy in different wavelengths of light highlights different features of its structure. In images taken by Hubble in optical light, the galactic center is too bright to see much detail, but in Webb’s infrared view, you can make out individual pinpricks of light. The Hubble image also highlights a smattering of pink splotches across the galaxy; according to an ESA release , those are hydrogen gas clouds that indicate where stars have recently formed. The merging of Hubble and Webb data makes a composite image that highlights the nuclear center of the galaxy while keeping features of its spiral arms—namely the brownish-red dust—intact.
The wavelengths elicit distinct feelings, too. The optical image makes the galaxy seem more ethereal, while the infrared image makes it look like a dreadful space whirlpool.
It’ll still be some time before the data can be sifted through by the scientific teams, who will then draw conclusions about how stars form in these nearby spiral galaxies; for now, we can just bask in the aesthetics of the cosmos.
