This is the main message from a new study showing that seven heart-healthy habits can lower your chances of developing dementia down the road. This list includes being active, eating better, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, having healthy blood pressure, controlling cholesterol, and keeping blood sugar (or “glucose”) levels in the normal range.
Exactly how these healthy habits lower risk for dementia isn’t fully understood, but they likely all work together, said study author Pamela Rist, an associate epidemiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston.
health /> “There are lots of health benefits from eating a healthy diet and getting regular physical activity including blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose control, and keeping body mass index [a measurement of body fat based on height and weight] in the healthy range,” Rist said.
“High blood pressure often leads to other subclinical markers of disease in the brain that are associated with dementia,” Rist said. Diabetes and high cholesterol may also increase risk of dementia. For the study, the researchers followed more than 13,700 women (average age: 54) for 20 years. During this time, 13% of the women developed dementia.
Women in the study received a score of zero for poor or intermediate health and one point for ideal health for each of the seven factors for a possible total score of 7.
Average score at the outset was 4.3; a decade later, it was 4.2, the study showed. For every one-point increase, dementia risk dropped by 6% after accounting for factors like age and education that influence the risk.
The more bad habits you cross off the list, the lower your risk for dementia, Rist said. Not all risks for dementia can be modified, such as your genes, so it’s important to take steps to change the ones you can, she advised.
There are other healthy lifestyle factors that may further lower your risk for dementia that aren’t on the list, such as continuing education through life, being engaged in social activity and getting good quality sleep, she added. “This is the initial seven, and an area of future research is to see if other things can be added to the list,” Rist explained.
Her advice? “Look at this list, and if there is something you aren’t doing that you should be, start doing it,” she said. For example, focus on taking steps to lower your blood pressure if it is high, or quit smoking.
The researchers didn’t look at how changes such as quitting smoking influenced the risk of dementia later in life. Yuko Hara, director of aging and Alzheimer’s prevention at the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation in New York City, called the findings “encouraging.”
“[They are] very much in line with the literature about lifestyle risk factors for dementia,” she said.
“The heart pumps blood to the brain, and the blood vessels and vascular system have to be healthy and in good shape for the brain to receive oxygen and nutrients needed for proper functioning,” Hara said. There are other modifiable risks for dementia that go beyond heart health, including alleviating stress, getting good quality sleep and staying connected socially, she added.
The preliminary study was released Feb. 27 and the findings are scheduled for presentation at a meeting of the American Academy of Neurology on April 22 to 27 in Boston and online. “Lip blushing is a form of semi-permanent tattoo or makeup where people are looking to rejuvenate the color of their lip border or the actual substance of the lip,” says Frank. “It is not uncommon as we age to lose the pigment, particularly women, in their lips and lip lines. With travel loss of color and lip definition, a lot of women use lip liner to accommodate this and to make the lips look slightly bigger.” Son adds, “this treatment delivers very natural results, once healed. Filler is great for creating volume in your lips, but lip blush delivers a more natural look and gives the illusion of fuller lips.”

When it comes to scabs, it’s important that they fall off naturally—picking them can result in scarring or loss of pigment in those areas. To find a trained specialist, it’s important to ask the right questions and not base your decisions off of social media. If they have a Yelp profile, check for reviews within the last six months regarding the service you’re looking to get. Some states require technicians to obtain a blood-borne pathogen certificate or a body art/esthetician license, but each state varies, so check your state board to learn what qualifications cosmetic tattoo artists require.

Instagram is a great discovery tool for learning about these procedures and potentially finding a technician to work with, but take caution and look at the tech’s body of work, not just one or two photos.

How Long Does Lip Blushing Last?

Like any procedure or treatment, there’s maintenance involved. Not picking the scabs off your lips is fundamental to an easy healing process—so is keeping them hydrated. Once the client is happy with the shape, we begin the actual tattooing of the lips,” said Son. Frank adds, “Although lip blushing does not make the lips actually larger, one perceives them to be bigger—just like makeup. It gives a plumper appearance or a more defined appearance. We must look at it as a semi-permanent form of makeup.”

Are there Cons to Lip Blushing?

Like with any procedure, there are some downsides, too. “The biggest con to lip blushing is if it’s not done appropriately, it could appear fake looking,” says Frank. That’s why it’s so important to do your research and find an incredible technician.

Other things to note: If you have a history of cold sores or herpes, the procedure could trigger an outbreak. Marvel Snap’s best discard decks and how to play them (MODOK or not)

Marvel Snap’s February 2023 seasonal meta has been dominated by MODOK, which means discard decks have never been more in style.

Many Snap decks fall into one of three archetypes: ramping up to a big combo or card on turn five or six, establishing tempo early to take control of the pace of the game and lock down some locations, or countering your opponent’s big combos or cards. Discard decks tend to fall into the first one — the cards you’re playing typically lead up to a massive play on turn six. But there are a few different variants of discard decks to be aware of.

I think the current easiest way to divide discard decks is into two categories: “Hela decks” and “Apocalypse decks.” A lot of Snap players are familiar with Apocalypse decks — Apocalypse is a powerful card in Pool 1, and can be a cornerstone for early decks. With the addition of MODOK to the game, Apocalypse has seen a resurgence in Snap, as the two cards have natural synergy together. MODOK discards your hand, and Apocalypse wants to be discarded, so it’s a great fit for a strong turn six.

Hela is newer for a lot of players, since the card is gated behind Pool 3. Hela decks have a higher ceiling than Apocalypse decks, but a lower floor, because of the inherent randomness of the effect: Hela resurrects every card you discarded this game in a random location. There is a certain amount of randomness to which cards you are able to discard each game, and then there’s the issue of where they get played. But if you manage to discard a lot of powerful cards before you play Hela, your chances are pretty good you’ll like the end result.

Let’s start with a rundown of some of the best cards to be aware of in the discard rotation, before getting into the Apocalypse versus Hela of it all.

Good cards for discard decks in general

• Lady Sif: A three-cost, four-power card, Lady Sif is extremely valuable because of her effect, which discards the highest-cost card from your hand on reveal. By taking out a good amount of the randomness inherent to discard decks, you have more control over your endgame — you can basically guarantee discarding your Apocalypse or a high-value card you want to resurrect with Hela with Lady Sif.
• Morbius: A two-cost, zero-power card, Morbius gains two power every time you discard a card. If you have a deck built around discarding as many times as possible, Morbius can be the rare two-cost card that wins you a lane on its own. A fair warning, though: Morbius’ effect is an ongoing one, which means it can be nullified by Enchantress or stolen by Rogue.
• Dracula: A four-cost, zero-power card, Dracula discards a card from your hand at the end of the game and takes its power. One of the best cards in Snap, Dracula can easily win a location on its own if you have the right deck for it — either discarding an Apocalypse one final time and taking on its power, or discarding a card like The Infinaut and gaining 20 power without having to worry about the “you can’t play a card the turn before” condition. Also in Dracula’s favor: the effect is not ongoing (therefore it is immune to Enchantress), and since it happens at the conclusion of the game, it’s Shang-Chi-proof as well.
• Sword Master and Hell Cow: These two aren’t necessarily a combo package, but they’re good for the same reason — they have high power for their costs. Sword Master is a three-cost, six-power card that discards a random card in your hand, while Hell Cow is a four-cost, six-power card that discards two random cards in your hand. Generally speaking, I think these cards are better in Hela decks, where you’re trying to discard a ton of cards (whereas in an Apocalypse deck you’re trying to discard one card repeatedly), but they’re solid in both decks and can help you win lanes while also pursuing your ultimate win condition.

Good cards for Apocalypse decks

• Colleen Wing and Swarm: A combo package, you’d definitely want to take these two together if you decide to include them. Colleen Wing’s effect is the opposite of Lady Sif’s, discarding the lowest-cost card from your hand on reveal. Swarm, a two-cost, three-power card, creates two zero-cost duplicates of itself when discarded. So if you play Colleen Wing with Swarm in your hand (when you have no other two-costs or one-costs), you’re guaranteed to get two free cards. It might not sound like much, but it might make all the difference on turn six, when you can play a six-cost and two more cards. These cards are less good with a Hela deck, because you want Hela to resurrect more powerful cards.
• Lockjaw: Cards played at the same location as Lockjaw will be replaced by another card in your deck. This happens after their “on reveal” effect, so you can play lower-power discard cards like Blade, Gambit, and Lady Sif, utilize their discard effect, and then also gaming replace them with (hopefully) a higher-power card on your board. This works particularly well with Colleen Wing and Swarm, as you can use your zero-cost Swarms on the Lockjaw location as well.

Good cards for Hela decks

• Jubilee: Your Hela deck is going to include too many powerful cards to play, so you’ll want to introduce other ways to put them on the board. Jubilee, who plays an additional card from your deck, is a great way to bring in a surprise powerful card, and can help you stay competitive if you don’t draw Hela.
• Ghost Rider: Ghost Rider plays a card you discarded already — think of it as a mini-Hela. A great combo is to play Lady Sif on turn three (discarding one of your big cards) and then Ghost Rider on turn four (playing that very same discarded card).
• The heavy hitters: The most important part of a Hela deck is all the big cards you want to get resurrected. It’s the usual suspects; any card with a high power will do the trick: The Infinaut, Giganto, Magneto, Death, and Hulk all fit the bill. But if you’re looking for something a little more interesting, Captain Marvel is another fun one to include.
• Invisible Woman: A Hela deck can be easy to read, and once you start discarding some major cards, a well-placed Cosmo or Shang-Chi can mess your whole day up. Invisible Woman can help you hide that information until it’s too late, and leaves room for you to play MODOK with Hela, since MODOK’s effect won’t take place until after the game if played behind Invisible Woman. Even without Modok, you can use Invisible Woman for some of your other discard effects (like Hell Cow) to make sure you don’t accidentally discard Hela.

Alternates worth considering: Gambit, Wolverine

The goal: Get as many of your giant cards on the board as possible. Lady Sif and Ghost Rider are a crucial combo, and Jubilee also helps. But the main thing is discarding your big cards with Lady Sif, Sword Master, and Hell Cow, so that Hela can revive them all at the end. One important word of warning: Be wary of playing Jubilee before playing Lady Sif or another discard card, unless you already have Ghost Rider in your hand. Drawing Ghost Rider with Jubilee is a surefire way to have a bad time with this deck.

Alternates worth considering: Morbius, Dracula, Hulk, Invisible Woman

Finally, here are some beginner discard decks for players not yet in Pool 3.

The best Marvel Snap Pool 2 discard deck

In response to a tweet about the controversy, Twitter owner Musk said Sunday that the “media is racist.” He didn’t criticize Adams’ comments, and Musk said without evidence that for a “very long time, US media was racist against non-white people, now they’re racist against whites & Asians.” “Same thing happened with elite colleges & high schools in America,” Musk wrote. “Maybe they can try not being racist.”
Musk later agreed with a tweet saying Adams’ comments “weren’t good” but had an “element of truth” to them. He also accused the media of giving Black victims of police violence disproportionate coverage over White victims of police violence. Black people are more likely to die from police use of force than White people, according to multiple studies.
Hate speech on Twitter
The Twitter CEO’s comments come amid an influx of hate speech on his platform. The Center for Countering Digital Hate and the Anti-Defamation League both said in recent reports that the volume of hate speech on Twitter has grown dramatically under Musk’s stewardship.
Specifically, the Center for Countering Digital Hate said that daily use of the n-word under Musk is triple the 2022 average and the use of slurs against gay men and trans persons are up 58% and 62%, respectively. The Anti-Defamation League said in a separate report that its data shows “both an increase in antisemitic content on the platform and a decrease in the moderation of antisemitic posts.”
Adams said on his YouTube show last week that “If nearly half of all Blacks are not OK with White people — according to this poll, not according to me, according to this poll — that’s a hate group.”
“I don’t want to have anything to do with them,” Adams added. “And I would say, based on the current way things are going, the best advice I would give to White people is to get the hell away from health Black people, just get the f**k away … because there is no fixing this.”
Adams has since said on Twitter that he was only “advising people to avoid hate” and suggested that the cancellation of his cartoon signals that free speech in America is under assault.
The newspapers that have cut the comic strip have been clear with readers.
“Scott Adams, creator of the Dilbert comic strip, went on a racist rant this week … and we will no longer carry his comic strip in The Plain Dealer,” wrote Chris Quinn, editor of the paper. “This is not a difficult decision.”
“We are not a home for those who espouse racism,” Quinn added. “We certainly do not want to provide them with financial support.”
The USA Today Network, which operates hundreds of newspapers, and the Washington Post, also stopped running “Dilbert.” –CNN’s Oliver Darcy contributed to this report.

World’s Largest Oil Corporation to Lead Climate Change Talks in 2023 — Global Issues

Credit: The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Opinion by Gadir Lavadenz, Pablo Fajardo Mendoza (quito, ecuador / la paz, bolivia) Monday, February 27, 2023 Inter Press Service QUITO, Ecuador / LA PAZ, Bolivia, Feb 27 (IPS) – The Chief Executive of the twelfth largest oil producer – Sultan Al Jaber of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) – has been appointed as president of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) COP28, the biggest climate change conference that will take place in November, 2023 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In brief, the leadership of a Climate Conference that should deliver on ways to create a fossil-free future is in the hands of the representative of one of the top 15 corporations most responsible for carbon emissions globally. Like any other oil company, ADNOC’s very reason for existence is to profit off of the very product that has sent global greenhouse gas emissions soaring and spurred a global climate emergency.
In fact, ADNOC Drilling under ADNOC Groups reported a rise of 33 percent in 2022 net profit with a projection of record net profit in 2023 fueled by further oil and gas expansion plans. And now at least 12 employees of ADNOC have been given organizing roles for COP28. That means this year the global climate negotiations will literally be run by the fossil fuel industry.
Fierce criticism has arisen from all over the world and in particular from climate activists that have been long fighting for a fossil fuel free climate COP. In reaction to this appointment, more than 450 climate and human rights organizations wrote a letter to UN Secretary General António Guterres and Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC condemning the appointment of Al Jaber as COP28 President.
The thin argument presented for the appointment of Al Jaber is his involvement in renewables as chairman of Masdar, a “clean-energy innovator” investing in renewables. But that alone does not compare to the evidence on the negative role and powerful influence of the fossil fuel industry in the climate talks. The fossil fuel industry has completely co-opted climate policy from the inside out. The most offensive illustration of this co-option and corporate capture of climate talks is the current reality that someone like Al Jaber will preside over a crucial session of climate negotiations at such a time when complete and equitable phase out of fossil fuels is a critical and immediate action needed to protect the planet.
And this is not happening for the first time! More than 630 fossil fuel industry lobbyists participated in COP27 last year at Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt and health 18 out of 20 COP27 sponsors were either directly partnered with or are linked to the fossil fuel industry. This ongoing 30-year experiment of allowing the largest polluters, their financiers, and polluter governments to undermine a meaningful global response to climate change has delivered predictably poor and unacceptable results. Several reports last year including this report by the UN Environmental Programme showed that the world will miss the target set in the Paris Agreement by world leaders to limit global warming below 1.5?.
So, what’s the solution? It’s time for international climate policy to finally be protected from polluting interests, and this is the reason many are proposing a concrete drawing from other UN precedents to systematically weed out this undue interference. The UN Secretary General has recently equated the fossil fuel industry’s modus operandi as “inconsistent with human survival,” also agreeing that “those responsible must be held to account.’
A concrete Accountability Framework should be implemented by the UNFCCC drawing from other UN precedents to systematically weed out this undue interference.
Parties to the UNFCCC have to change the course of how climate talks are moving and provide immediate and clear signs of deep structural changes that can lead to just transition. Governments across the world should be actively protecting climate action from being written, bankrolled, and weakened by polluting interests. Rather, it’s (past) time to implement real, proven, and people-centered solutions and hold polluting corporations liable for their decades-long deception and deceit. These are not new ideas. These are not even radical ideas. They are necessary ones.
The indigenous peoples, peasants, women and frontline communities who face and suffer the serious consequences of the impacts of climate change, together with the social groups of the world that have a real interest in curbing the emissions of greenhouse gasses, demand that the decision makers implement the necessary changes in order to ensure that appropriate measures are adopted by the world and governments at COP28 to prevent the collapse of the planet. If these necessary measures are not rectified and implemented immediately, it is world leaders and the decision makers who would be mainly responsible for the collapse of our planet. For us it is clear, Sultan Al Jaber does not have the moral or ethical rectitude to lead and deliver on a COP28 that is for the peoples. Netflix Jamie Lee Curtis is among the many celebs lately who’ve caught flak for being a “nepo baby” — but she said to hell with that after her big win … one selected by actors for actors. The legendary star got picked for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture at the SAG Awards Sunday … which clearly took her by surprise, but which she handled with gusto and grace in her acceptance speech, coming straight from the heart and chock-full of emotion. You’ll earn way more lying on the floor than you ever would sitting at a laptop conjuring a synonym for fetid (try noisome). The 30-year-old “Bodak Yellow” singer visited an NYPD “Girls Talk” event at the police training academy in Queens and shared what the department said was “her rags to riches story.” She danced with teens and posed for photos.

Cardi B’s plea deal requires her to perform 15 days of community service by March 1 to avoid a 15-day jail sentence.

“I feel like there’s so many people that make y’all probably feel like, ‘This is what’s cool, this is what’s going on, this is what it takes to be lit, this is what it takes to be fire,’” Cardi B told her young audience.

“Sometimes that’s a little bit of peer pressure like on a girl. Don’t fall into that. You know what I’m saying? Like, be great. Be you. travel You’re amazing. You’re dope yourself.”

The NYPD posted a video to Twitter showing highlights of the event.

That drew criticism from some people, including a retired police lieutenant, who questioned whether Cardi B was an appropriate role model for children given her sometimes provocative lyrics, criminal record and past admission that she drugged and robbed men while working as a stripper before she got famous.

Cardi B, a New York City native whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, has been chronicling her community service on Twitter all week. On Saturday, she wrote: “Community service has been the best thing that has happened to me.”

She likened the experience to a spiritual journey that sometimes left her in tears. “Those people that we leave behind they just need somebody to talk and a lil push and YOU might be able to change their life forever,” she wrote.

In another post, on her way to the police academy, the multiple-platinum selling artist and mother of two complained about waking up early to perform community service before going to the recording studio, but added: “I did the crime ‘I only have myself to blame’.”

Cardi B agreed in September to a conditional discharge just as her case was about to go to trial. She pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges stemming from the August 2018 fights. Ten other counts, including two felonies, were dismissed. Two co-defendants also pleaded guilty.

In a statement at the time, Cardi B said: “Part of growing up and maturing is being accountable for your actions. As a mother, it’s a practice that I am trying to instill in my children, but the example starts with me. I’ve made some bad decisions in my past that I am not afraid to face and own up to. These moments don’t define me and they are not reflective of who I am now.”

According to prosecutors, Cardi B and her entourage were targeting employees of Angels Strip Club in Flushing, Queens, over an apparent personal dispute. In one fight, chairs, bottles and hookah pipes were thrown as the group argued with a bartender. She and another employee had minor injuries.

In 2019, Cardi B rejected a plea deal that would have given her a conditional discharge. Prosecutors then presented the case to a grand jury and obtained an indictment that included the two felony charges.

NYPD Chief of Training Juanita Holmes created the “Girls Talk” program to build trust and foster mentorships between police officers and girls, with occasional special guests. Ballet dancer Misty Copeland spoke to the group at police headquarters in December 2021.

Cardi B’s chart-topping hits include “I Like It” and the Maroon 5 collaboration “Girls Like You.”
